Learn how to defeat the Barroth in Monster Hunter: World. Discover its weaknesses, strengths, attacks, and strategies for Low Rank, High Rank, and Tempered variants.
You’ll first encounter a Barroth during the assignment The Best Kind of Quest. After completing this assignment you’ll unlock the quest Mired in the Spire. Advancing capture quests from the Smart Biologist by completing Snatch the Snatcher unlocks another capture quest targeting the Barroth, Landing the Landslide Wyvern. After defeating the High Rank Pukei-Pukei in the mandatory High Rank expedition to the Wildspire Waste, you’ll be able to challenge a High Rank Barroth in the quest A Crown of Mud and Anger. Much later on, you can get an optional quest to hunt a Barroth and a Radobaan in the quest Showdown: The Muck and the Maul.
General Information:
- Type: Brute Wyvern

The only weak spots on the Barroth are the front limbs and the tail, with the former being more receptive to damage. The head, arms, and legs are all breakable, while the tail is severable.
Barroth's elemental resistances change depending on whether it’s coated in mud. When coated in mud, it’s resistant to Fire and weak to Water (which removes its mud coating). When bereft of its mud coating, it’s highly vulnerable to Fire and resistant to Water. It’s always resistant to Thunder.
Barroth is highly susceptible to Poison, Paralysis, and Blast, and resistant to Stun.
While Barroth can’t inflict elemental damage directly, falling into or being covered by the mud it discharges can inflict Waterblight, which hinders Stamina recovery. Use a Nulberry to cure this affliction.
The Barroth may retreat to the swamps along the southern end of the Wildspire Waste if pressed, as it’s lair is in the swamp. Fighting in high water will slow you down; this can be mitigated by equipping the Aquatic Expert skill.

Barroth is a mighty, armored Brute Wyvern whose thick hide can be further supplemented by rolling around in mud, which deflects most attacks. While in sandy areas, you have little to worry about, but in swamps, it’ll take a break from battle to roll about and improve its defense, or if hard pressed, it’ll flee to the swamps where it lairs.
While it may appear slow, Barroth is actually quick in close-quarters combat, and its aggressiveness means it attacks relentlessly, often leaving little window for a riposte. Common attacks include pounding its head into the ground, swiping with its head (sometimes appending a charge), side-checking into enemies, thrashing with its tail, and performing a heavy bull-rush. Its charge attacks can stun the unwary.
Barroth can expel mud, usually with its head-pound attack, but sometimes by vibrating and dislodging piles of mud around itself. Coming into contact with this mud can inflict Waterblight, retarding Stamina recovery.
