Learn how to navigate the Battle Palace in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, understand move types based on Pokémon natures, and defeat Frontier Brain Spenser for the Silver and Golden Spirits Symbols.

The Battle Palace is a challenging area in the Battle Frontier where Pokémon's move choices are determined by their nature, not player input. To reach it, travel south from the Battle Pyramid and then west, entering the southern building.

In the Battle Palace, moves are categorized into three groups: ATTACK (damage-dealing moves like Psychic), DEFENSE (stat-boosting moves like Growth), and SUPPORT (opponent stat-lowering or status-inflicting moves like Screech). A Pokémon's nature influences its preference for these move types, rated from 1 (least favorite) to 5 (favorite).

Here's a breakdown of natures and their move type preferences:

  • Adamant: Neutral (3) in all categories.
  • Bashful: Neutral (3) in ATTACK, Favorite (5) in DEFENSE, Least Favorite (1) in SUPPORT.
  • Bold: Neutral (3) in ATTACK, Dislikes (2) in DEFENSE, Favorite (5) in SUPPORT.

It is recommended to use Pokémon with natures that favor attack moves to expedite battles.

After defeating seven consecutive trainers, you will earn Battle Points. Clearing the Battle Palace three times in a row leads to a battle against the Frontier Brain, Spenser.

Spenser - First Battle

Spenser's Pokémon:

  • Crobat (Poison/Flying)
  • Slaking (Normal)
  • Lapras (Water/Ice)

Strategy: Use fast Psychic-type Pokémon against Crobat, or Rock and Electric moves. Be wary of Toxic and Double Team. For Slaking, which attacks every other turn due to its Truant ability, use a strong Fighting-type Pokémon. The same Fighting-type can be effective against Lapras, but also bring an Electric or Grass-type Pokémon.

Defeating Spenser the first time earns the Silver Spirits Symbol.

Spenser - Second Battle

After clearing the Battle Palace six consecutive times, you will face Spenser again. His Pokémon team will change.

Spenser's Pokémon:

  • Arcanine (Fire)
  • Slaking (Normal)
  • Suicune (Water)

Strategy: Use Water or Ground-type Pokémon against Arcanine. Again, a Fighting-type is good for Slaking. Suicune has high Defense and Special Defense, so use your strongest attacks to defeat it.

Defeating Spenser the second time earns the Golden Spirits Symbol.
