Walkthrough

    Upon entering Rustboro City, head north to the Pokemart.

    Continue north to the Pokemon Center to heal your Pokémon.

    Exit the Pokemon Center and enter the house immediately to its left. Talk to the man inside to receive HM01 (Cut). This HM can be taught to a Pokémon and used to cut down bushes and wild grass. It has a power of 50 and can be used as an attack in battle. To use it outside of battle to cut trees, you must defeat the Rustboro City Gym Leader. Unlike TMs, HMs can be used an unlimited number of times.

    Return to the Pokemon Center and head east to the fountain. Enter the building directly above the fountain – this is the Pokemon Trainer's School.

    Inside the school, read the board about status conditions. Talk to the teacher to receive a Quick Claw, an item that increases the chance of striking first in battle. It's best given to a slow Pokémon.

    Leave the school and head north through the city to find the Pokemon Gym.

    Before entering the gym, you can visit the house to the right of it to trade your Ralts for a Seedot named Dots, who is holding a Chesto Berry. This trade is optional.

    Enter the Pokemon Gym to challenge Gym Leader Roxanne.

Gym Battle: Roxanne

Gym's Pokemon Type: Rock

Recommended Types: Ground, Grass, Fighting, Water, Steel

Not Recommended Types: Electric, Bug, Poison, Flying, Fire

There are three trainers in the gym before Roxanne:

  • Youngster Josh: Geodude, Level 10 (Rock/Ground)
  • Youngster Tommy: Geodude, Level 8 (Rock/Ground), Geodude, Level 8 (Rock/Ground)
  • Hiker Marc: Geodude, Level 8 (Rock/Ground), Geodude, Level 8 (Rock/Ground)

Gym Leader Roxanne's Pokémon:

  • Geodude, Level 12 (Rock/Ground)
  • Geodude, Level 12 (Rock/Ground)
  • Nosepass, Level 12 (Rock)

Strategy:

  • If you chose Treecko or Mudkip, use Water or Grass-type attacks for 4x damage against Geodude. Lotad with Absorb is also effective.
  • If you chose Torchic, Fire-type attacks are weak against Rock. Consider using a Water or Grass-type Pokémon like Lotad.
  • Nosepass has high Defense and Special Defense but low Attack and HP. Water or Grass-type attacks are still recommended for 2x damage.

Post-Gym Event: After exiting the gym, follow the Team Aqua member and the Devon Corporation employee north and then east onto Route 116.
