Guide to New Mauville in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. Learn how to access the cave, solve the switch puzzle, find items, and get TM24 Thunderbolt from Wattson.

The cave in Route 110 leads to New Mauville, but you'll need the basement key to access it. Head to Mauville City and find Wattson outside the gym near the Pokémon Center. He's concerned about the generator in New Mauville making noises. Talk to him to receive the basement key. Return to Route 110, head south to the water, and use Surf to sail east. You'll find the cave; enter it and unlock the door to New Mauville.

New Mauville Pokémon:

  • Voltorb (Very Common)
  • Magnemite (Very Common)
  • Electrode (Very Rare)
  • Magneton (Very Rare)

Voltorb can evolve into Electrode, one of the fastest Pokémon, with good stats but limited move learning. Its Explosion move can be powerful but risky. Magnemite is an Electric/Steel type vulnerable to Fire, Fighting, and Ground. It boasts good defense and strong attacks, making it a viable Electric-type choice. Their evolved forms can also be found here and evolved through leveling.

The puzzle in New Mauville involves blue and green switches that open and close doors. Crucially, both switches cannot be active simultaneously. Be cautious of items, as some are actually wild Voltorb.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Enter the basement and head down. Hit the blue switch to open the blue gate to the left.
  2. 2
Enter the blue gate and proceed to a room with a green switch. Hit the green switch.
  3. 3
Head left and follow the path to another room. You'll find another blue switch, but ignore it.
  4. 4
Enter the opening to your right. Go all the way right through an opening to find an Ultra Ball.
  5. 5
Head back left and enter the small opening to the north. Pick up the Escape Rope.
  6. 6
Hit the blue switch where the Escape Rope was. Go through the newly opened gate to your left.
  7. 7
Head north and find two items. The left item is a Paralyze Heal. The right item is a fake Voltorb; battle it.
  8. 8
Do not hit any switches. Head north and follow the path to two openings. The right opening is blocked by a green gate.
  9. 9
Head south. You'll find two items; the right one is a full Heal and a green switch. Hit the green switch to open the gate to the right.
  10. 10
Enter the room to the right and hit the red switch on the floor. This will stop the generator.
  11. 11
To the right of the generator, pick up the Thunderstone.
  12. 12
Head back left. The blue gate is now closed. Go south and battle the Voltorb posing as an item.
  13. 13
Hit the blue switch. Head back left and follow the path to the next set of switches. Ignore them.
  14. 14
Head south and then east into the next area. Both green gates are locked.
  15. 15
Go right and battle the Voltorb posing as an item. Hit the green switch to open both gates.
  16. 16
Head south through the small opening, then take the gate on the right to return to the area where the Ultra Ball was.
  17. 17
Follow the path to the staircase, head up, and exit the cave back to Route 110. Surf back to Mauville City.

Wattson will be waiting for you in Mauville City. Talk to him to receive TM24: Thunderbolt as a reward. This is Electric-type's best move in the game, with 95 power and 100 accuracy, and a chance to paralyze.

You can return to New Mauville later for more side quests, but for now, head east onto Route 118 to continue the main adventure.
