Cross the bridge to the right of the Weather Institute.

Prepare to battle your rival.

If you chose Treecko: Your rival will use Pelipper (Level 29, Water/Flying), Lombre (Level 29, Water/Grass), and Combusken (Level 31, Fire/Fighting). Pelipper is weak to Electric and Rock. Lombre can be countered with Poison or Flying. Combusken is weak to Water, Flying, Psychic, and Ground.

If you chose Torchic: Your rival will use Lombre (Level 29, Water/Grass), Slugma (Level 29, Fire), and Marshtomp (Level 31, Water/Ground). Use the same strategies for Lombre. Slugma can be defeated with Water attacks (boosted by rain) or Rock/Ground attacks, and is slow. Marshtomp is 4x weak to Grass.

If you chose Mudkip: Your rival will use Slugma (Level 29, Fire), Lombre (Level 29, Water/Grass)*, Pelipper (Level 29, Water/Flying)*, and Grovyle (Level 31, Grass). The asterisk indicates that if you are playing as a boy, your rival (May) uses Pelipper, and if you are playing as a girl, your rival (Brendan) uses Lombre. Both are easy to defeat. Grovyle is fast with below-average defense, making it vulnerable to Poison or Flying attacks.

After defeating your rival, pick up the Elixir to the south.

Surf south on the water to find a Leaf Stone.

Battle Guitarist Fabian (Manectric, Level 26, Electric) and Ninja Boy Yasu (Ninjask, Level 26, Bug/Flying) for a potential double battle.

Head north from your rival's battle location and follow the path to a trainer. A fake tree to the left hides Ninja Boy Hideo. You can initiate a double battle by stepping between them.

Battle Ninja Boy Hideo (Koffing, Level 25, Poison; Koffing, Level 25, Poison).

Continue north to find another Ninja Boy with a fake tree; battle him.

Continue east into Fortree City.

Tips

Pelipper has a 4x weakness to Electric-type attacks.
Lombre's Water/Grass typing means it has no special weaknesses, so use strong attacks.
Combusken's Fire/Fighting typing offers multiple weaknesses.
Slugma is slow and can be defeated easily with Water attacks, especially during rain, or with Rock/Ground attacks.
Marshtomp is 4x weak to Grass-type attacks.
Grovyle has high speed and low defense, making it susceptible to quick KOs.
HM02: Fly is a two-turn attack in battle; you are immune to most attacks on the first turn while flying.
