Begin your Paldea adventure in Cabo Poco! Learn how to choose your starter Pokémon, battle Nemona, and get your first Pokédex upgrade in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Alright, let's get you started on your Paldea adventure in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet! You'll kick things off right in your own bedroom in Cabo Poco, a cozy little spot on the south coast. Don't just sit there – press any direction on the circle pad to get up and moving!

Head downstairs, and you'll see a little Skwovet scamper into the room on the left. Follow it! Your Mom's in the kitchen, but before you can chat for too long, someone knocks on the door. Head back towards the stairs to see who it is – surprise! It's Director Clavell from the academy. After that little chat, head back upstairs to your room and check out your bag and hat near your bed. Go on, put them on!

Now, back downstairs to the living room. Clavell wants you to follow him outside, so head for the door and step out into the world.

Cabo Poco

You're now outside in Cabo Poco, and Paldea is HUGE and open – way more than you might be used to! You'll see Clavell introduce you to the three starter Pokémon: Sprigatito (the Grass cat), Fuecoco (the Fire crocodile), and Quaxly (the Water duck). You'll pick one to be your first partner, but for now, they'll all tag along behind you as you walk. And yeah, you walk pretty slow at first, but don't worry, your Mom will hand you a Rotom Phone, and soon enough, you'll be able to run by holding the circle pad all the way. Keep following the path east until you see a lady standing in the grass, just past a red signpost on your left. That's your cue to start running!

Continue east, up the white stairs. At the top, you'll get a cute cutscene with the starters and meet Nemona, a girl your age.

Your First Pokémon

This is it – time to choose your very first Pokémon! You've got Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Honestly, there's no wrong choice here, so just pick the one that looks coolest to you. Whatever you pick, you can still build an awesome team later on.

After you choose, Nemona will pick one of the remaining two starters – it'll always be the one that has a type advantage against yours. Clavell will then take the last one. Next up, Nemona wants to battle! Head to the right of the building, towards the beach. You'll find a battle court there, and Nemona will be waiting in the center. Talk to her to start the fight.

Pokémon Trainer Nemona

Nemona's team is set up so her starter is weak against yours:

  • If you picked Sprigatito, she has a Level 5 Water-type Quaxly.
  • If you picked Fuecoco, she has a Level 5 Grass-type Sprigatito.
  • If you picked Quaxly, she has a Level 5 Fire-type Fuecoco.

To get an easy win, just use an attack that's super-effective against her Pokémon. That means using:

  • Leafage (Grass) if you have Sprigatito.
  • Ember (Fire) if you have Fuecoco.
  • Water Gun (Water) if you have Quaxly.

This move will deal double damage. Use it again on the next turn, and you'll knock out her starter in no time!

After the battle, Clavell will upgrade your Rotom Phone, adding the Pokédex function. This means when you see a Pokémon species, its basic data will be added to your Pokédex automatically. To get the full info, you'll need to catch one later.

Once you're done, head back to the base of the white stairs in front of the building. Your Mom will come over, give you a Sandwich, and then it's off to school! Follow the path west, then take a right at the T-junction towards Poco Path.
