Walkthrough

    Move left into the path of the Pole 'n' Chain (a swinging obstacle). Jump over it when it swings underneath. Continue left to find the first Star Coin. Grab it as the Pole 'n' Chain swings underneath, then land and proceed left through a short tunnel.

    Exit the tunnel and grab the Blue Clock (a time-extending item) to your right. Turn back left, being careful not to hit the Cosmic Clone (an enemy that mimics your movements). Continue left, jumping over two sets of spiked blocks onto a slightly elevated path. Take a running jump off this to clear a Spiny (an enemy) and grab the Blue Clock.

    Keep moving left, jumping onto the main platform. Move to the Large ? Block (a block containing items) and hit it while moving from right to left to maximize coins without the Cosmic Clone catching up. Avoid the spiked blocks on either side of the Large ? Block. Move left and jump onto the cracked blocks.

    Move north along the blocks to grab the second Star Coin. Do not touch the cracked blocks on the left before grabbing the coin to ensure you have a platform to land on. Run along the left side of the blocks and back down to the south side to grab a Blue Clock.

    Move right and jump back onto the platform you started on. Circle around this platform, dodging the Spiny and Cosmic Clone, until the cracked blocks reappear. Jump onto the reappearing blocks, run left, and jump onto the platform there. If you fall, entering the Warp Pipe (a pipe that transports you) will return you to the platform right of the blocks, but this wastes time.

    Continue left, jumping over a brick block and a Spiny. Grab the Blue Clock along the back wall and proceed. Jump over the next Spiny. Ignore the Green Shell (an item that can be used as a weapon) ahead as it is an obstacle. Jump over the brick block square and move to the Warp Pipe.

    Before entering the Warp Pipe, look for the shadow of the third Star Coin to the right of the pipe. Wall jump off the back wall directly north of this shadow to reach the Star Coin. You will land back on the ground. Enter the Warp Pipe.

    Exit the Warp Pipe and grab the Green Clock (a time-extending item). Run to the right brick block and hit it to get a Super Star (a power-up that makes you invincible). Use the Super Star to defeat the Cosmic Clone. Hit the left brick block for a coin. Jump up the steps to the north. At the top step, take a running jump off the left edge to land on the Goal Pole (the end of the level) for a 1-Up (an extra life).

Special 8-2 Walkthrough:

  1. Run north and jump onto the first rotating block when it stops. From there, jump to the next platform, watching out for the Rocky Wrench's (an enemy) wrench. Stomp the Rocky Wrench for a coin and continue north. Wait for the next rotating block to stop and jump on. Jump from block to block until you reach the next main platform, staying in the center of the blocks.
  2. Continue north to the next set of rotating blocks. Jump onto the first block and move to the center as it spins. When the longest face of the block is to the right of the center, run and jump to the next block. Repeat this with the next block to jump right onto the platform.
  3. The Rocky Wrench on this platform throws coins. After collecting coins, stomp him for an extra one and move north. Jump onto the left side of the next rotating block. Wait for the block to rotate so its longest part is north of you, then jump to the next block from a closer distance. Repeat this from the left side of the next block to reach the final block.
  4. Move to the right side of this final block. Stay in the center until the brown part is facing up. Jump up to grab the first Star Coin above you. Wait for the long part of the block to move north of the center to jump to the next block.
Tips
  • For Special 8-2, you need a Tanooki Suit or Statue Leaf power-up to obtain the second Star Coin. Bring one with you if you intend to collect it.
  • In Special 8-2, the Rocky Wrenches throw coins; you can collect them for a while if desired.
  • Always stay to the center of the rotating blocks in Special 8-2 to maintain balance.
  • If you fall to the ground below the cracked blocks in Part 100, entering the Warp Pipe will return you to the platform right of the blocks, but it wastes time.
