Wards are the primary tools for establishing and maintaining this vital vision, providing invaluable information that can dictate the flow of the entire game. Understanding where and when to place wards, and what their effects are, is a fundamental skill for any successful player.

Wards are consumable items that, when placed on the map, grant vision in a radius around them. They are essential for controlling the map, securing objectives, and preventing surprise attacks. There are two main types of wards: Observer Wards and Sentry Wards, each serving a distinct but equally important purpose. The strategic placement and timely dewarding of these items can provide a significant advantage.

Observer Wards: The Eyes of the Map

• Purpose: Observer Wards provide unobstructed vision of an area, revealing both enemy and allied heroes, creeps, and buildings. They are invisible to the enemy unless detected by Sentry Wards or other detection methods.
• Placement: Ideal locations for Observer Wards include high ground areas, common jungle paths, Roshan pit, and key intersections that overlook important areas of the map. Placing them in 'power runes' spots is also critical.
• Duration: Observer Wards last for six minutes before expiring.
• Cost: They are relatively inexpensive, making them a staple for supports.

Sentry Wards: The Hunters of Stealth

• Purpose: Sentry Wards are also invisible to the enemy but have a much smaller vision radius. Their primary function is to detect and reveal invisible units and wards.
• Placement: Sentry Wards are crucial for dewarding enemy Observer Wards, revealing invisible heroes like Riki or Bounty Hunter, and detecting illusions. They are often placed directly on top of enemy Observer Wards or in areas where invisible heroes are suspected to be.
• Duration: Sentry Wards last for four minutes.
• Cost: They are slightly more expensive than Observer Wards.

Other Forms of Vision and Detection

Beyond basic wards, Dota 2 offers other ways to gain vision and detect enemies:

• Gem of True Sight: A valuable item that grants true sight (reveals all invisible units and wards) to its carrier. If the carrier dies, the Gem is dropped and can be picked up by the enemy.
• Dust of Appearance: A consumable item that, when used, reveals all invisible units in an area around the caster for a short duration.
• Sentries (Hero Abilities): Some heroes have abilities that provide detection or true sight, such as Slardar's Amplify Damage or Weaver's Shukuchi (which grants temporary invisibility but can be seen by sentries).
• High Ground Vision: Units on high ground have an advantage, as their vision extends further down into lower ground areas.

Strategic Ward Placement and Dewarding

Effective warding is an art form. Supports are typically responsible for warding, but all be aware of vision needs.

• Early Game: Wards are crucial for lane control, securing runes, and preventing early ganks.
• Mid Game: Warding around Roshan, key jungle entrances, and objectives like towers becomes paramount.
• Late Game: Deep warding into the enemy jungle can provide critical information for pickoffs and objective pushes.
• Dewarding: Actively hunting and destroying enemy wards with Sentry Wards or detection items is as important as placing your own. Denying vision to the enemy is a significant advantage.
