Learn the rules and strategies for playing Caravan, the unique card game in Fallout: New Vegas. Build your deck, understand card effects, and win caps!

Walkthrough
  1. 1
To start playing Caravan, speak to Ringo in Goodsprings' gas station after completing the initial tutorial missions. He will offer to play and provide a starter deck of 54 cards.
  2. 2
Before a game, you can wager Caps. You must then select a minimum of 30 cards for your deck.
  3. 3
The game involves building three "Caravans" (lines of cards). Each Caravan's total value must be between 21 and 26 points to be considered "sold". Higher sold Caravans are better.
  4. 4
The opponent always goes first. You can discard any number of cards before your first play. Each subsequent discard gives the opponent a turn.
  5. 5
You must first place a starting card for each of your three Caravans.
  6. 6
Subsequent cards played on a Caravan must follow an ascending or descending numerical order, based on the previous card played.
  7. 7
The ascending/descending rule can be broken if the card being played has the same suit as the card it's being played on.
  8. 8
You cannot play two cards of the same value on each other.

Card Effects:

  • Ace: Value of 1.
  • 2-10: Adds their numerical value to the Caravan's strength.
  • Jack: Can be played on numerical cards and adjacent face cards to remove them from play.
  • Queen: Can be played on numerical cards and Aces to change the direction (ascending/descending) of the Caravan.
  • King: Can be played on numerical cards and Aces to double the value of the card they are played on. Multiple Kings can stack to further double the value.
  • Joker: Can be played on numerical cards or Aces. On numerical cards, it removes all other cards of that number from play. On Aces, it removes all non-face cards of that suit from play.

Deck Building:

  • You can build your Caravan deck using assorted cards found or purchased.
  • The limit is one card per type, per suit, per deck. For example, you cannot have two Jack of Hearts from The Topps deck, but you could have one from The Topps deck and one from the Gomorrah deck.

Reward: Winning Caravan games typically rewards Caps. The best two out of three Caravans sold wins the game. In case of a tie in "sold" Caravans, the higher Caravan value wins.
