Learn how movement speed works in Neverwinter! We cover base speeds, modifiers like feats, encumbrance, haste, and how to walk vs. run.

Alright, let's talk about how fast you can zip around Neverwinter! Your character's movement speed is pretty important for getting places, whether you're exploring or in the heat of battle. It's not just one number, though; it's a base speed that gets tweaked by a bunch of things. Base Speeds: * Player Characters (PCs): You'll be running at 4 meters per second (mps) by default. Walking is half that, so 2 mps. * Dungeon Masters (DMs): They can move at a brisk 11 mps. * Monsters: Most monsters have a normal running speed of 3.5 mps, or a fast speed of 4.5 mps. Some have other speeds defined by the module builder, but these are the most common. What Modifies Your Speed? Lots of things can change your speed, and they usually do it as a percentage. Most of these stack multiplicatively, but some bonuses, like from certain feats, get added in. Keep in mind, your speed can't go above 150% of your base speed, with a cool exception for Monks! * Feats: Some feats, like Monk Speed (which you get at level 3 as a Monk) or Barbarian Fast Movement, can boost your speed. The Monk Speed feat is particularly good, letting higher-level Monks go way faster. * Encumbrance: Carrying too much loot slows you down. Being lightly encumbered reduces your speed to 75%, and heavily encumbered drops it to 50%. If you're also in stealth or detect mode, it gets even worse! * Haste & Slow: The Haste spell gives you a nice 50% speed bonus, while the Slow spell slaps you with a 50% penalty. * Effects: Other magical effects or spells can increase or decrease your movement speed. * Detect & Stealth Modes: Being in detect mode (unless you have Keen Senses) or stealth mode disables running. If you're in both, you get a 50% penalty. This is why you can't just sprint around while trying to be sneaky! Walking vs. Running: Running is your default. To walk, you can hold down the SHIFT key while moving with your mouse (just clicking on the ground, not on an object). If you're using keyboard controls, you might need to go into the options menu and assign a key to 'drive mode forward' to force walking. Running is automatically disabled when you're encumbered, in stealth mode, or in detect mode. Maximum and Minimum Speed: * Maximum: Normally, you can't go faster than 150% of your base speed. However, Monks with their Monk Speed feat can reach up to 300% (or even 430% for a level 40 Monk!) of their base speed. * Minimum: If you're not completely immobilized, the slowest you can be is 12.5% of your base speed. Sometimes, much slower speeds can happen due to technical issues, which players often call 'lag'. Important Note: If your character's appearance is changed (but not through polymorphing, using the `SetCreatureAppearanceType()` command), their movement rate will change to match the default for that new appearance. However, if you change your appearance back to one of the standard player character looks (0-6), you'll go back to your normal PC speed.
