    Enter Diglett's Cave from Route 11, east of Vermilion City.

    Head past the man and down the ladders into the main cave passage.

    Follow the north-westerly path, encountering wild Diglett, Dugtrio, and Zubat.

    Continue to the end of the cave and climb the ladders.

    Exit the cave to the south, arriving on the north-east part of Route 2.

    Near the Diglett's Cave entrance on Route 2, go anti-clockwise around the entrance to find 3 Great Balls.

    Use Chop Down on the skinny tree to the north-east of Route 2 to access Pewter City.

    If you choose to go back to Pewter City, you can enter the museum via a side door.

    Head south from the Diglett's Cave entrance on Route 2.

    Use Chop Down on a skinny tree and continue south towards the eastern gatehouse.

    Exit the gatehouse south and head towards the south-east corner of Route 2.

    Pick up the Leaf Stone and Super Potion on the floor.

    (Optional) If you have time, use Chop Down on a skinny tree on the left and head south back to Viridian City.

    In Viridian City, go to the south-west corner and hack down the skinny tree to get TM11 Will-O-Wisp from the person there.

    Return to Route 2 and enter the researcher's house.

    The researcher will teach your partner Pokémon the Secret Technique, Light Up.

    Your rival will then appear outside and offer to take you to the Route 9 entrance at Cerulean City. Accept this offer to progress towards Rock Tunnel.
