Your guide to Route 4 in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, covering wild Pokémon, trainer battles, and items like Mystic Water and TM28 Dig.
Alright, let's tackle Route 4 in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2! This route is a bit of a maze with trainers and wild Pokémon, and you'll need certain HMs to explore it fully later on. We'll break down the wild Pokémon you can find and the trainers you'll face.
First off, you'll notice that some areas require Surf (after Gym 5) and the Super Rod (post-game) to access specific wild Pokémon. Don't worry about those for now; we'll focus on what you can get on your first pass.
Wild Pokémon Encounters
In the main sandy area of Route 4, you'll find these wild Pokémon:
- Sandile (Ground/Dark) - 35% Encounter Rate
- Darumaka (Fire) - 35% Encounter Rate
- Trubbish (Poison) - 25% Encounter Rate
- Scraggy (Dark/Fighting) - 5% Encounter Rate
Once you get Surf (after beating Gym 5), new Pokémon will appear in the water:
- Frillish (Water/Ghost) - 50% Encounter Rate
- Alomomola (Water) - 95% Encounter Rate (in Rippling Water)
- Jellicent (Water/Ghost) - 5% Encounter Rate (in Rippling Water)
And with the Super Rod (post-game), you can fish up even more:
- Finneon (Water) - 65% Encounter Rate (Fishing)
- Clamperl (Water) - 30% Encounter Rate (Fishing)
- Qwilfish (Water/Poison) - 5% Encounter Rate (Fishing), 30% (Rippling Water)
- Lumineon (Water) - 60% Encounter Rate (Rippling Water)
- Huntail (Water) - 5% Encounter Rate (Rippling Water)
- Relicanth (Water/Rock) - 5% Encounter Rate (Rippling Water)
Trainer Battles
Route 4 has a few trainers to test your skills. Be prepared!
Pokemon Breeder
The first trainer you'll likely encounter is a Pokemon Breeder. She's a good one to train on!
| Pokemon | Level | Type |
| Drilbur | 16 | Ground |
| Marill | 16 | Water |
Remember, you can try to avoid their line of sight if you're in a hurry, but battling them is great for experience.
Policeman (First Encounter)
After the Breeder, you can head into the sandy area or continue north. If you explore the sandy area, you might run into a Policeman.
| Pokemon | Level | Type |
| Growlithe | 16 | Fire |
| Herdier | 16 | Normal |
Near the stairs leading down to the water, you'll find two Fishermen. You can battle them for some extra experience. The northern Fisherman has a single Basculin at Level 17, while the southern one has a Psyduck (Level 16) and another Basculin (Level 16). Don't forget to grab the Mystic Water item located past them!
Pokemon Trainer Colress
Continuing north on the main path, you'll encounter Colress. He'll use a machine to make some Crustle blocking the way flee, and then he'll challenge you.
| Pokemon | Level | Type |
| Magnemite | 21 | Electric/Steel |
| Klink | 23 | Steel |
After the battle, Colress will give you a Protein before leaving.
Buildings and Items
As you continue north, you'll pass a few buildings. The first on the right doesn't have much, but the second building on the right is worth entering. On the second floor, you'll find a Wide Lens next to a television.
In the next building on the left, a man on the second floor will give you a Sitrus Berry. The final building on the right at the T-junction has a woman who plays a guessing game with Pokémon cries – guess right and you'll get a Poke Toy.
Policeman (Patrolling)
If you decide to explore west from the T-junction instead of heading to Join Avenue, you'll find a patrolling Policeman. If you step into his line of sight, he'll challenge you.
| Pokemon | Level | Type |
| Riolu | 21 | Fighting |
| Growlithe | 21 | Fire |
Finding Red Shard and TM28 Dig
After defeating the patrolling Policeman, head west and then north. You'll find a small shack where you can heal your Pokémon. Continue west, then go down the stairs to the south. In this sandy area, head south and then up the stairs to the west. Follow the narrow path north to find a Red Shard. You'll need to be right next to it and press 'A' to pick it up.
Backtrack down the stairs, head east, then south. You'll find another Policeman here.
| Pokemon | Level | Type |
| Herdier | 22 | Normal |
After that battle, head south, then southeast to some stairs. Go up them and follow the path north to find TM28 - Dig! This is a super useful TM for escaping caves and can be used in battle.
From here, you can either head back towards Join Avenue and Nimbasa City, or continue exploring Route 4.
