Master course completion in Super Mario Land! Learn about Goal Pole rewards, time bonuses, special events triggered by remaining time, and 1-Up bonuses with power-ups.
This section details what happens when you complete a course in Super Mario Land, covering coin rewards, time bonuses, special events, and extra lives.
Walkthrough
- 1Goal Pole Coins: The height you reach on the Goal Pole determines coin rewards, ranging from 1 Coin to a 1-Up. Reaching the very top earns a Golden Flag, which is required to unlock Special 8-Crown. The coin amounts are as follows:
- 1 Coin: Very bottom of the Goal Pole
- 22 Coins: Approximately half a body-length from the bottom
- 34 Coins: Approximately a full body-length from the bottom
- 48 Coins: Approximately 1.5 to 2 body-lengths from the bottom
- 510 Coins: Anywhere above two body-lengths, but below the very top
- 61-Up: Very top of the Goal Pole
- 7Time Bonus Coins: Remaining time is converted to coins using the formula: Time remaining / 10 = coins earned (rounded down). Finishing with more time yields more coins.
- 8Special Events: If your remaining time ends in a 6, 3, or 1 when you grab the Goal Pole, a special aesthetic event occurs:
- 6: Balloons appear on-screen.
- 93: Fireworks appear on-screen.
- 101: Confetti appears on-screen.
- 111-Up Bonus: If you are wearing a Propeller Box or Coin Box when you grab the Goal Pole, you earn a 1-Up.
Course Exiting:
- You can exit a course to the Overworld at almost any time, except when in mid-air. This prevents players from avoiding death or abusing power-ups by exiting immediately after obtaining them (e.g., a Statue Leaf).
- Exiting an uncompleted course does not reset your 'death count' for Help Block appearances. However, it does reset the death count if the course has already been completed.
Easter Eggs & Trivia:
- UFO in World 1-3: Look through binoculars at the start, zoom in on Toad, zoom out, and wait. A UFO will appear in the sky.
- Supernatural Being in Ghost Mansion Courses: Wait near the Goal Pole of a ghost mansion course. A supernatural being will appear behind the fence to the right.
- Character Mechanics: Luigi's higher jump and sliding ability are a throwback to Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) / The Lost Levels.
- The Legend of Zelda Reference: The 'puzzle solved' sound from The Legend of Zelda series plays after lighting all braziers in World 5-2 to open the gate to a Star Coin.
- Original Super Mario Bros. Fanfare: The original fanfare from Super Mario Bros. plays when grabbing the Goal Pole in World 2-3 and Special World 1-3.
