Walkthrough
- 1In Part 31, collect the red coins. Hide in the south-south-west corner until only one coin remains, then grab it and the appearing 1-Up.
- 2You should see Star Coin #3 on your right as you move upwards. Time your boomerang throw to hit it. If you miss, you can use Tanooki Mario (if you have the White Tanooki Suit) to hover back to the platform after jumping to grab it.
- 3Defeat the two Sandmaarghs that appear in the north-west and north-east parts of the platform.
- 4To avoid Spiked Balls, stay in the first corner to the right of the southern edge of the platform until it reaches the top. Let the Spiked Balls and Giant Spiked Balls knock into each other. Collect coins from crushed Spiked Balls if available.
- 5As you move north near the steps, four Pokies will spawn. Dodge them or defeat them if you are Boomerang Mario.
- 6At the top of the steps, enter the cannon. Aim at the center of the yellow ring and fire to reach the Goal Pole.
- 7In World 5-2, move right and hit the Large ? Block and normal block for coins. Continue through the door on your right.
- 8Jump over the gap with two Spinies. You can throw a Boomerang or shoot a fireball at them, but it's not necessary. Continue through the next door.
- 9Fall into the pit, jump over the Spiked Poles, and exit the pit. Be careful of the Spiny on the platform; throw a Boomerang or run past it. Jump into the next pit.
- 10Move through the next pit, dodging Spiked Poles. Exit the room to your right.
- 11Jump onto the platform, dodging Spikebars.
- 12Star Coin Alert! #1 (World 5-2): In this room, jump south where the southern path should be to find a hidden path and the Star Coin. Dodge the Spikebar when jumping back down and take the eastern path.
- 13Star Coin Alert! #2 (World 5-2): In the next room, hit the ? Block. If you have Fire Mario, shoot fireballs into the braziers in each corner to light them. Once lit, the portcullis on your right will lift. Walk through, grab the Green Clock, break crates for coins, and grab the Star Coin. Run left back to the room with three paths and take the northern path this time.
- 14Hit the Checkpoint (an auto-save point you restart from on death) Flag. Jump down the large ditch with coins, collecting them as you fall and jump from the rubber platform. Jump back out.
- 15Continue around the hole, taking the path to your right, collecting coins. Deal with the Spiny if you wish.
- 16Move north and deal with the second Spiny. Lure it to the other Spiny if it's chasing you before continuing.
Tips
- For Part 31, being quick with red coin collection reduces dodging Spiked Balls.
- Star Coin #3 in Part 31 is one of the most difficult in the first eight worlds. Don't worry if it takes a few tries.
- In Part 31, the corner near the southern edge of the platform is a safe spot from Spiked Balls.
- If you need Fire Mario for World 5-2 Star Coin #2, you can store a Fire Flower in your inventory by selecting it and then selecting something else to switch it.
- In World 5-2, you can avoid the Spinies and Spiked Poles by simply running past them.
