Learn how to defeat Kahuna Hala in Pokémon Sun and Moon's Grand Trial 1. Discover his Pokémon, weaknesses, and the best strategies to earn your first Z-Crystal!

Alright, so you've made it to Melemele Island's Grand Trial, and you're up against Kahuna Hala. This is probably the toughest fight you've faced so far, but don't sweat it – we'll get you through this!

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Mankey - Level 14 - Fighting
  • Makuhita - Level 14 - Fighting
  • Crabrawler - Level 15 - Fighting

Hala's Pokemon and Types:

  • Mankey (Fighting)
  • Makuhita (Fighting)
  • Crabrawler (Fighting)

Strategy:

  • Hala's entire team consists of Fighting-type Pokémon. This means you have a clear advantage if you use Pokémon with moves that are super-effective against Fighting types. Think Psychic, Flying, or Fairy type moves.
  • Ghost-type Pokémon are also a solid choice because they are immune to Fighting-type attacks.
  • If you started with Rowlet, you'll have a pretty straightforward time just using its Flying-type moves to peck away at Hala's team.
  • If you've caught and trained an Oricorio, it'll also make short work of Hala's Pokémon, especially if it has Flying or Psychic moves.
  • Be aware that Crabrawler has a move called Pursuit, which can be a bit tricky for Psychic-type Pokémon. Just keep an eye on its HP and switch if needed.
  • Hala also has access to Super Potions, so be prepared for him to heal up his Pokémon during the battle.
  • Upon defeating Hala, you'll receive the Fightium Z, the Z-Crystal for Fighting-type moves. This officially marks your success in passing the Grand Trial of Melemele Island!
  • Additionally, all Pokémon up to Level 35 will now obey you, even if they were traded to you.
  • Hala will also give you a Ride Pager, which adds Tauros Charge as a Ride Pokémon option. You can summon Tauros by pressing the Y button.
  • Professor Kukui will gift you TM54 False Swipe. This move is incredibly useful for battles, as it always leaves the opponent with at least 1 HP, preventing accidental knockouts. Just remember it doesn't affect Ghost-types unless you use a move like Foresight first.

Once you've secured your victory and your rewards, it's time to move on. Head to the Marina in Hau'oli City. You can use your new Tauros Charge Ride Pokémon to get there quickly. If you need directions, just check the map on your bottom screen. Kukui and Lillie will be waiting for you there to take you to the next island!
