The Battle Tree

Challenge Red and Blue at the Battle Tree in pokemon sun moon. Learn their Pokemon teams and strategies for this postgame challenge.

Red is the protagonist of the original Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow and the Champion of the Kanto region. His team includes:

• Pikachu (Level 70, Electric)
• Lapras (Level 65, Water/Ice)
• Snorlax (Level 65, Normal)
• Charizard (Level 66, Fire/Flying)
• Venusaur (Level 66, Grass/Poison)
• Blastoise (Level 66, Water)

Red's Pikachu is a glass cannon, capable of high damage with Volt Tackle but easily KO'd. It also uses Nuzzle for paralysis and Light Screen to reduce special move power.

Lapras has high HP and bulk, making it tough to defeat. Electric-types are recommended due to its Blizzard. Watch out for Ice Shard at low HP.

Snorlax has high HP, Attack, and Special Defense. It uses coverage moves like Heavy Slam and High Horsepower. Fighting-types or strong physical attackers are best.

Charizard is weak to Rock-types but carries Focus Blast. Fast Rock Pokemon like Lycanroc or Archeops can be risky. It also uses Will-o-Wisp against physical attackers.

Venusaur has good all-round stats, with high Special Attack and Special Defense. It uses STAB moves, Leech Seed to drain HP, and Bulldoze. Psychic or Flying physical attackers are effective.

Blastoise has high defensive stats. It's an all-attacker with Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Dark Pulse, and Flash Cannon. Electric or Grass-types are key.

Blue is Red’s rival from the original Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow. His team includes:

• Alakazam (Level 65, Psychic)
• Arcanine (Level 65, Fire)
• Exeggutor (Level 65, Grass/Psychic)
• Aerodactyl (Level 65, Rock/Flying)
• Gyarados (Level 65, Water/Flying)
• Machamp (Level 65, Fighting)

Blue's Alakazam uses Psychic and Ghost-type moves and Reflect. It's very fast. Dark-types are an easy win.

Arcanine is well-rounded with Flare Blitz, Thunder Fang, Bulldoze, and Extreme Speed. It has Intimidate. Ground-types are recommended, or Water/Rock-types that can withstand hits.

Blue's Exeggutor is weak to Bug-types, and also Fire, Flying, Ice, Ghost, and Dark-types. It hits hard.

Aerodactyl has high Attack and Speed. A bulky Pokemon resistant to Rock-types is advised. It uses Flash Cannon and Crunch. Steel Pokemon are recommended. Beware of Sky Drop.

Gyarados should be countered with an Electric-type before it uses Dragon Dance. Otherwise, it can sweep with Aqua Tail, Ice Fang, and Crunch.

Machamp uses Knock Off and Poison Jab. Flying-types are the only safe counter. It is slow, so one super-effective hit should be enough.

After defeating Red or Blue, you can explore the Battle Tree. You will encounter both trainers again if you progress far enough.

Ahead, speak to the office worker at the altar to challenge the Battle Tree. This is a gauntlet of computer-controlled trainers until you lose or give up. You can leave between battles.

The trainers here are much smarter, and their Pokemon have competitive movesets. All Pokemon are set to Level 50 for battles, making the difficulty significantly higher than the main story.

If you are immediately trounced, do not panic. You may not have been properly prepared for this level of play.

If hardcore battling isn't your preference, that's fine. You should still explore the area.

In front of the altar is a PC for managing your Pokemon party. To the right is an Ace Trainer who is the IV Judge. He may not be impressed initially.

To earn his favor, you must show him a Pokemon with high IVs and have hatched 20 or more Pokemon Eggs.
