Ultra Beast Sighting: Episode Rr

Learn how to encounter and capture the Ultra Beasts Blacephalon (Ultra Sun) and Stakataka (Ultra Moon) in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon with this guide.

In Poni Grove, you'll meet the Ultra Recon Squad, who give you 5 Beast Balls. Beast Balls are highly effective against Ultra Beasts, while regular Poké Balls have a low catch rate. Additional Beast Balls can be bought for 1,000 Poké Dollars each at Aether Paradise's entrance.

Instead of exploring Poni Grove, run around in the nearby tall grass to find the Ultra Beast.

Ultra Beast

Blacephalon (Ultra Sun)

This colorful, clown-like Ultra Beast has a high Special Attack, boosted by its aura. Pokémon with high Special Defense and Fire resistance are recommended. Blacephalon uses Fire Blast and Shadow Ball for STAB damage. Its signature move, Mind Blown, deals massive Fire-type damage but halves its HP. If Blacephalon's HP is below half when it uses Mind Blown, it can KO itself, ruining capture attempts. To catch it, you can use weak moves to avoid lowering its HP below half, then wait for it to use Mind Blown. Alternatively, Pokémon with the Damp Ability will prevent Mind Blown from failing.

Stakataka (Ultra Moon)

This defensive Ultra Beast receives a boost to its Defense from its aura. It has good Attack and Special Defense, but low Speed, making it suitable for Trick Room teams. Special Attackers are ideal for this battle. Stakataka uses Rock Blast and Iron Head for STAB. Its main challenge is its high Defense, which it can further increase with Iron Defense (up to twice). Use Special Attackers to deal damage efficiently. Physical attacks can be used to chip away at its HP near the end, and Ground-type physical attacks are particularly effective due to Stakataka's double weakness.

After capturing or defeating the Ultra Beast, Hau will gather everyone. Run in the tall grass again to encounter another of the same Ultra Beast, using the same strategies. Once the battle concludes, the operation ends, the Ultra Recon Squad departs, and you'll return home to the next day.
