Follow our comprehensive Dragon's Dogma 2 walkthrough to complete 'The Caged Magistrate' quest, including how to get the guard disguise and rescue Waldhar.
Walkthrough
- 1Start the Quest: Complete Brant’s quests until 'Seat of the Sovran'. Head to The Stardrop Inn in Vernworth’s Merchant Quarter and speak to Captain Brant on the balcony at night. Ask about the quest to receive the Gaol Key and mission details.
- 2Obtain Guard Disguise: Acquire the Marcher Set. You can buy it for 6000G from Philbert’s Sundries or find it for free in a chest in the first room of the Guardhouse next to the palace.
- 3Infiltrate the Gaol: Choose one of three entrances:
- 4Sewer Entrance: (Implied, not detailed in source)
- 5Palace Gaol Entrance: Go to the Tower in the palace grounds. A guard named Sonia will escort you to the barracks. Alternatively, go directly to the Gaol Tower entrance. Another guard will grant you passage if you mention Captain Brant. Follow the stairs down, enter the room on your left for a Waking Powder (optional), then enter the room to the right.
- 6Slums Entrance: Head west from The Gracious Hand, turn right to find the Gaol Entrance. Use the Gaol Key to unlock the first gate and head up the tower. Unlock another gate to enter the dungeons.
- 7Locate Waldhar:
- 8Slums Entrance Path: In the dungeons, head to the last cell on your left (north).
- 9Palace Gaol Entrance Path: In the room with the Magistrate, head to the first cell on your right.
- 10Urge Waldhar to Escape: Speak to Waldhar. If he doesn't immediately agree to leave, you may need to complete 'The Heel of History' quest first. Once he agrees, escort him out. If he is slow, you can carry him.
- 11Escape the Gaol: Head to the northern end of the dungeons, unlock the large gate with the Gaol Key, and descend the spiral stairs. Unlock the final gate to reach the Slums, where Waldhar will escape.
- 12Report to Brant: Return to Captain Brant to report the successful rescue.
Tips
- Brant only appears at night. If it's daytime, pass the time by speaking to the barkeeper or dozing on a bench.
- If you enter from the Guardhouse, you can get the Marcher Outfit for free.
- If Waldhar is slow to follow, pick him up and carry him.
- If Waldhar doesn't follow after you urge him to escape, you need to complete 'The Heel of History' side quest. This involves visiting the church in Vernworth Slums, speaking to locals, clearing a ruin tower, and finding a lad. After completing it, return to Waldhar and tell him about a place with tomes.
