Follow our guide to complete the Foal of the Dead side quest in Hogwarts Legacy. Learn how to start the quest, catch a Thestral, and breed beasts.
Walkthrough
- 1To begin the 'Foal of the Dead' side quest, you must have reached the winter season in Hogwarts Legacy and have successfully completed Deek's previous quest, 'The Plight of the House-Elf'.
- 2After meeting these prerequisites, a notification will appear indicating a new quest from Deek. Speak with him to receive the task.
- 3Deek will instruct you to catch a Thestral. You will also need to purchase the breeding pen recipe from 'Tomes and Scrolls' in Hogsmeade for 1000 Galleons.
- 4With the recipe in hand, travel to the location Deek indicated on your map. You will find a herd of Thestrals there.
- 5Catching a Thestral can be challenging as they have four catch bars and will flee if spooked. Use the Disillusionment spell to approach them undetected, then use Leviosa to immobilize the Thestral long enough to capture it.
- 6Once you have caught one Thestral, the others may fly away. You will need to wait for a Thestral of the opposite sex to land back in the beast den.
- 7Use Disillusionment and Leviosa again to sneak up on and capture the second Thestral. Keep an eye out, as you might encounter a shiny Thestral during this process.
- 8After successfully capturing a breeding pair of Thestrals, return to Deek.
- 9Place the Thestrals in the new Swamp Vivarium and set up the breeding pen. Interact with the stand in front of the pen, select the Thestrals, and wait approximately 30 minutes for them to breed.
- 10Once the breeding is complete, you will find a baby Thestral. Interact with the baby to show it affection.
- 11Finally, speak with Deek to complete the 'Foal of the Dead' side quest.
Tips
- If you do not wish to keep the Thestrals, you can sell them to the beast shop in Hogsmeade.
- Be patient when trying to catch Thestrals, as they are easily spooked.
- The Disillusionment spell is crucial for sneaking up on Thestrals.
