Learn how to defeat Vyraal, a Rank V Hunt in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. Get tips on party setup, weaknesses, and strategy to win this tough battle.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
When you arrive in The Northsward and the Viera Wayfarer joins you, head north. Vyraal will be lurking north of the windmills in that area.
  2. 2
Before engaging, it's a good idea to have a party that can exploit its Wind weakness. A Black Mage with Aeroga is highly recommended. A Bushi wielding Ame-no-Murakumo makes a solid tank and damage dealer. For the third party member, a Shikari with the Zwill Crossblade or a White Mage who can focus on healing while the Black Mage/Monk deals damage with Aeroga are good options.
  3. 3
Equip your party with Bowline Sashes to help mitigate the Confuse status effect Vyraal can inflict.
  4. 4
When you enter The Northsward, cast Decoy on your Bushi and have them lead the way to Vyraal. Ensure your Bushi has Protect and Bubble buffs applied by yourself, not relying on the Viera Wayfarer.
  5. 5
Once you engage Vyraal, switch to your Black Mage. Apply Blind and Silence to weaken its offense.
  6. 6
Assuming you have appropriate curative Gambits set up, continuously pelt Vyraal with Aeroga until it's defeated.

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Level: 41
  • Weaknesses: Wind
  • Resistances: Earth (Absorbs), Dark, Fire, Holy, Ice, Lightning, Water (Halves)
  • Immunities: Disable, Disease, Doom, Immobilize, Oil, Petrify, Poison, Reverse, Sap, Stop
  • Safety: Yes
  • Drop: N/A
  • Steal: Spiral Incisor (55%), Charger Barding (10%), Leo Gem (3%)

Phases:

  1. Vyraal has over 100,000 HP.
  2. At certain HP thresholds, Vyraal may flee the fight and return later with some HP restored.
  3. When sufficiently damaged, Vyraal can use Magick Barrier to protect itself from magick attacks. If this happens, consider switching your Black Mage to a Shikari with a Zwill Crossblade, or equip your Black Mage/Monk with a Zephyr Pole for melee attacks.
  4. Vyraal will attack instantly once it's nearly dead, gaining a near-death boost. Be wary of this final surge.

Strategy:

  • Vyraal can inflict Confuse, so Bowline Sashes are highly recommended.
  • It can use Haste and Immobilizega. While Immobilizega can't be prevented, focus on preventing Confuse.
  • Vyraal uses technicks like Fireball, Lunge, Magick Barrier, Restore, and Sonic Fangs.
  • Vyraal ignores your Evade stat, so you cannot rely on evasion to survive its attacks. Focus on defense and healing.
  • Casting Decoy on your designated tank (like a Bushi) and ensuring they have Protect and Bubble buffs is crucial for survivability.
  • Use Blind and Silence magicks to reduce Vyraal's offensive capabilities.
  • Concentrate your damage with Wind-elemental attacks, primarily Aeroga from your Black Mage.
  • Upon defeating Vyraal, you'll obtain a "Viera Rucksack".
  • The quest giver will then ask you to return to Balfonheim Port.
  • Completing the hunt "Get My Stuff Back!" yields: 3,500 Gil, Aegis Shield x1, Dragon Scale x1, Halberd x1.
