Begin your Dragon Quest III adventure! Learn how to set up your Hero, choose your language, difficulty, and more in this essential prologue guide.

Alright, let's get your Dragon Quest III adventure started! First things first, you'll need to pick a spot to save your progress. You get nine Adventure Logs to choose from, which is pretty handy. You can save on the other eight later on, so don't stress too much about this first choice.

After you've picked your log, the game's gonna ask you a few questions to set up your main character, the Hero:

First up, you'll name your Hero. Then, you'll choose their appearance: A = Male or B = Female. After that, pick your language – Japanese or English. You'll also decide if you want your objectives to show up on the map – just say Yes or No. Finally, you'll select your difficulty: Dracky (Easy), Dragon (Normal), or Draconian (Hard). This guide will be walking you through on the Dragon (Normal) difficulty.

Heads up: You can actually change all these settings later in the game, so don't worry if you second-guess yourself!

Oh, and a couple of notes from the NES version that might be different: you won't see that epic cutscene of Ortega fighting the Hydra, and you can't name your Hero 'Erdrick' or 'Loto'. Also, remember that all characters, including the Hero, have a gender, and female characters tend to get better equipment and personalities, plus there are slight starting stat differences. My party in this guide will be all female!

One last thing: you can tweak your Battle Message Speed, Music Volume, and SFX Volume anytime you want from the in-game menu.
