Abelard has a head start with Heavy Armour Proficiency and his resilience will carry you through the early game. However, tanking as a strategy falls off hard in the later game. Therefore, if you're going to make good use of Abelard, you will want Jae and Cassia to feed him extra turns. Talking of extra turns, Get Into Cover! gives you as many as five extra turns which synergises with Cassia's Mastery of Time talent. Of the advanced archetype choices, I make him a Vanguard since that seems most fitting. Although most Vanguard abilities are defensive, they are weaponised by Beacon of Might which turns temporary HP into Strength for massive melee damage. Give him a big sword (or, even better, a rock saw) and point him at enemies you want deleted.

Abelard - Companion Quests

  Have Abelard accompany you while you personally look into a workers' strike on the lower decks.
• Blood Ties
  After returning from Commoragh, Abelard will report that his family have been accused of treason. Travel to Dargonus and do a bit of digging to get to the truth of the accusations.
