How to Dye Armor and Clothes in Baldur's Gate 3

Learn how to dye armor and clothes in baldurs gate 3. Find basic dyes for under 20 gold and rare dyes in chests.

Where to Find Dyes:

You can find a decent number of basic dyes early in baldurs gate 3 by speaking with merchants, such as those at the Emerald Grove. These include Green, Orange, Blue, Light Blue, Ocean, and Muddy Red dyes. They cost no more than 20 gold for a stack of six.

Rare dyes, which offer deeper hues or different colors not usually available from merchants, can be found in chests and other containers. These are often located in dangerous places. An example is the Brown Alabaster Dye found in a chest in the Owlbear cave northwest of the Emerald Grove.

How to Dye Armor and Clothes:

To dye an item in baldurs gate 3, right-click a dye in your inventory and select “Combine” from the drop-down list. A “Combine Items” window will appear with three boxes. Place the dye in the top-left box (it will be there automatically), drag the item you want to dye into the box on the right, and then hit the Combine button. The dyed item will appear in the box below.

What Can Be Dyed?

Most items in baldurs gate 3 can be dyed, including various pieces of armor (footwear, gloves, breastplates, robes, helmets) and clothing worn at camp. Dyes can be used on textiles and some metals, and even some weapons and shields, though some are restricted due to their designs. You cannot dye individual parts of the same item with different colors; you must dye the entire item.

If you are unsure if an item can be dyed, try to combine a dye with it. An “Invalid Combination” message will appear if it cannot be dyed.
