Complete the Free the Artist quest in baldurs gate 3. Solve the painting puzzle and deal with cursed skulls to get unique rewards.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Enter Lady Janneth's Estate. A Dragonborn Butler will let you enter freely. Be aware of poltergeists throwing furniture. A 'see invisible' potion or spell will make the quest easier.
  2. 2
Go upstairs to the bedroom and find the Artist and his wife. The wife will mention something is wrong with the Artist.
  3. 3
Proceed to the next floor, navigating through possessed furniture. You can fight the ghosts by destroying the furniture they possess.
  4. 4
As you approach the attic, you will encounter sturdy 'Cursed Skulls' that cast Thunderwave, potentially knocking your party down the stairs.
  5. 5
To bypass the Cursed Skulls, use spells or items like Dimensional Door, Misty Step, Disintegrating Night Walkers, Shar boots, Arcane Gate, Enhance Leap, Fly (including Illithid Powers or Potion of Fly), or high-level spells to destroy them from a distance. Jumping near floor railings can also avoid their range.
  6. 6
In the attic, find the Oskar painting on the floor and place it on an easel. This reveals a secret door.
  7. 7
Inside the secret area, approach the second easel and burn the painting with the Torch of Revocation to lift the mansion's haunting.
  8. 8
Return to the master bedroom to speak with the Artist and his wife.

You have two choices for the ending of the Free the Artist quest in baldurs gate 3:

  • Let Oskar live: You receive a painting that displays a UI portrait of one of your party members. This is a vanity item with a sell-back value of 30g.
  • Let the Poltergeist kill Oskar: You receive the Ring called 'Till Death Do Us Part'. This ring allows the wearer to resurrect when downed but applies a Shadowy curse that requires 'Remove Curse' to lift.
Tips
  • Consider using a 'see invisible' potion or spell early on to make navigating the estate easier.
  • The Cursed Skulls in the attic are a significant hazard; prioritize using mobility spells or ranged attacks to deal with them.
  • The rewards for this quest are generally considered minor, so choose the ending that best suits your roleplaying preference.
