Learn how to locate Lord Gortash in Wyrm's Rock Fortress and strategies to defeat him and his allies in Baldur's Gate 3, including trap disarming and party positioning.
Walkthrough
- 1Finding Gortash: Gortash is initially in the throne room of Wyrm's Rock Fortress. If you speak to Orrin first, she'll ask you to kill Gortash, changing his location to above the throne room, accessible via west-side scaffolding or northwest stairs. It's recommended to disable the Steel Watch via the Steel Foundry quest before confronting Gortash to avoid them interfering.
- 2Alliance Offer: Gortash may offer an alliance, asking you to kill Orrin. It's generally advised to refuse this offer later, as reaching Orrin is more difficult. If you ignored Gortash and proceeded to save the Duke and disable the Steel Watch, he will likely be hostile upon your return.
- 3Initiating the Fight: If you previously considered Gortash's offer, he may still be open to discussion even after you've completed other objectives. To start the battle, choose dialogue options like "Say goodbye, Gortash" or, if Karlach is present, "Karlach, stop this. You’re burning too hot."
Tips
- Trap Preparation: Before entering the Audience Hall to confront Gortash, disarm the traps on either side of the entrance from the statue room. These traps can explode and deal significant damage to both Gortash and your party.
- Party Positioning: Place mages or characters with low Armor Class (AC) on either side of the entrance. Use a high AC character to initiate the conversation with Gortash.
- Initial Combat Focus: At the start of the battle, prioritize defeating Gortash's allies: Black Gauntlet Ulova, Iron Consul Lo, and Iron Consul Jaxbock.
- Gortash's Buffs: Gortash gains "Shell of Resistance" from traps at the back of the room for one turn, granting immunity to Thunder damage and resistance to elemental damage. Save powerful elemental spells for subsequent turns. He also uses "Reflectoguard" on himself and allies, deflecting projectiles for two turns.
- Gortash's Abilities: Gortash uses a Crossbow with the Point-Blank feat, allowing him to attack at close range without Disadvantage. He also has feats like Authority (Advantage on Intimidation/Insight), Dark Devotion (Advantage on Charm/Frightened saves), and Dauntless (immunity to Frightened and other emotion-altering conditions).
- Environmental Hazards: Be aware that traps near the entrance can fire Concussion Grenades, which explode a turn or so later, damaging anyone on the floor.
