Guide to finding Balthazar in Baldur's Gate 3. Learn how to solve the Thorm Mausoleum painting puzzle and navigate the Gauntlet of Shar to reach him.
The Thorm Mausoleum is located north of Moonrise Towers and west of Last Light Inn. The easiest approach is via the graveyard between Reithwin Town and The Waning Moon, passing the Mason’s Guild. In the graveyard, you can find Malus Thorm in The Healing House.
At the Mausoleum entrance, Raphael will appear and ask you to deal with his 'nemesis' within. Ignore the Herald of Balthazar at the large iron gate and proceed. Loot the east and west rooms before entering the northernmost room. The east room's traveller's chest contains the uncommon Vivacious Cloak.
Thorm Mausoleum: Painting Puzzle Solution
In the northernmost room, you'll find three paintings and buttons. This puzzle opens a hidden area behind the large skull portrait. Be aware of traps; failing to perceive them can cause a darkness effect.
The solution is to press the buttons in this order:
- Button beneath the tower painting.
- Button beneath the painting of a grieving man over a woman.
- Button beneath the painting of the man on the throne.
A blue mist will appear, and the wall behind the skull portrait will open upon correct activation. Interact with the Traversal Gem to reach the Gauntlet of Shar.
Where to Find Balthazar in the Gauntlet of Shar
Head north and open the stone door. In the next room, solve the statue puzzle to unlock the door to the trials of Shar. Alternatively, to reach Balthazar directly, head west to a locked door. This door can be broken down with physical attacks or lockpicked.
In the subsequent room, use the mushrooms to the left of the sarcophagus to jump up to an Underdark area. To the north is a door leading to Balthazar. Alternatively, on the opposite side of this area, a Level 8 Cloaker guards a chest containing gold, ingots, and a very rare Scroll of Planar Binding. The Cloaker spawns Phantasms, but they disappear when the main Cloaker is defeated.
