Learn how to free the Intellect Devourer in Baldur's Gate 3. Discover the best methods, skill checks, and consequences for aiding this creature during the prologue.
Walkthrough
- 1After waking up on the Nautiloid Ship, interact with the "Neural Apparatus" in the second room to activate a lift.
- 2Ride the lift to the second floor and proceed north to find the corpse of Myrnath (around x=2, y=436).
- 3Listen for a voice and examine Myrnath's corpse. You may need to pass a Perception check to locate the source.
- 4Engage in dialogue and ask "Who am I talking to - a man or a brain?" to trigger an Arcana check. A successful check identifies the Intellect Devourer.
- 5You have the option to destroy the brain immediately by choosing "Destroy the brain."
- 6To free the Intellect Devourer, choose one of the following methods:
- Investigation & Medicine: Pass a DC 10 Investigation check by inspecting the exposed brain. This may reveal a complication, unlocking a DC 10 Medicine check to attempt a cerebral extraction with Advantage.
- 7Strength: Pass a DC 10 Strength check to break the skull.
- 8Dexterity: Pass a DC 10 Dexterity check to gently prise the brain from the skull.
- 9After freeing the brain, you can choose to sabotage it with a DC 15 Dexterity check ("Mutilate the brain"). Failing this check will cause the Intellect Devourer to attack.
- 10If you choose not to sabotage it (e.g., by selecting "Spare the creature - any injuries might weaken it."), the Intellect Devourer, named Us, will offer to accompany you to the helm.
Tips
- The DC 15 Dexterity check to "Mutilate the brain" is difficult for early characters and carries a high risk of combat if failed.
- If Us is not provoked, it will have a "Newborn" debuff for 5 turns, reducing its HP, Armor Class, and giving it Disadvantage on Attack Rolls. This makes it easier to manage.
- Once the "Newborn" debuff fades, Us's stats improve significantly (11 HP to 21 HP, AC 7 to 12).
- Having Us accompany you can significantly ease the prologue, especially for ranged characters and spellcasters, as it can draw enemy attention.
