    After the Gym Battle in Petalburg Gym, Norman will escort you out. You will meet Wally and his uncle.

    Wally's uncle will give you HM03 (Surf) as a thank you for helping Wally.

    Surf is a Water-type move with 90 Power that hits all adjacent opponents. In the field, it allows you to cross bodies of water.

    You and Wally will automatically travel to Mauville City.
