Route 119 Concluded

Finish Route 119 in Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire! Find items, defeat your rival, and get the Fly HM.

Alright, you've made it through the Institute! First things first, make sure you've healed up at the beds. Now, head east, cross that bridge, and go downstairs. You'll want to Surf southeast from there, just keep going until you reach the eastern shore. Look for a small patch of grass – use your Dowsing Machine here, as there's a hidden Ultra Ball waiting for you!

Continue down the river, and you'll spot a Leaf Stone near a rock barrier. If you head back upriver from where you first started Surfing, you'll find a waterfall. Land on the eastern side and check the northernmost grassy spot for a Max Ether.

Now, let's get back to solid ground and head north from where you were Surfing. Your rival is going to show up here, and seeing your Mega Bracelet, they'll challenge you to a battle!

Honestly, your rival hasn't changed much since Route 110, just their Pokémon's levels are higher. But hey, there are new ways to counter them! Plus, it's raining right now, which can totally shake up your strategy – and theirs.

If you've got Mega Latias or Latios, you can just go all out with Surf or Luster Purge. It's pretty effective.

• Shroomish: It's got the usual Grass moves and some status effects. If you have a Flying or Bug Pokémon, this should be a breeze. Standard STAB moves work fine, unless you started with Swampert – then it's a bit trickier.
• Wailmer: This Pokémon will really take advantage of the rain. With STAB, its Water moves hit at 2.25x power, which is stronger than a regular super-effective hit! So, you'll want to take it out fast. Pikachu with Discharge, Thunderbolt, or Thunder is great here. Grass or other Grass-type Pokémon like Breloom or Sceptile work too. Swampert is also a solid choice, as it can wall Wailmer by taking Water damage while dishing out Ground moves.
• Slugma: Surf + Rain = Instant KO. Seriously, even without STAB, this hits for 300% damage, and with STAB it's 450% or even 540% with an Expert Belt. If you still have your Surf user out, great! If not, bring back your Latios/Latias and teach it Surf. Even untrained, they can OHKO Slugma. Ground moves from Swampert or Fighting moves from Blaziken are also good options. Most Water, Ground, or Fighting types will handle it easily since its Fire moves are weakened.
• Grovyle: This is another one where you can just bring in a direct counter (preferably not Fire) and win. Your Lati works well, resisting Grass and hitting back hard with Luster Purge. Flying and Bug Pokémon are also good choices, nothing too complicated here.
• Combusken: Just nuke it with your Latios/Latias or a Water Pokémon. It's not much of a threat in the rain.
• Marshtomp: This one's a real threat in the rain. Bide does leave it open for a KO, though. A good Grass Pokémon or one with Grass moves will do the trick for an instant KO, like Breloom, Gardevoir with Magical Leaf, or Gallade with Leaf Blade. You can also wall it with Latios/Latias; they resist Water and are immune to Ground, so just use Surf or Luster Purge. Surf is actually stronger due to the rain, even with STAB.

After the battle, you'll receive HM02 (Fly). Fly is okay in battle, taking two turns, but it's way more useful for getting around the map to places you've already visited. You'll need the Feather Badge to use it outside of battle, though!

With that done, keep going along the path. When you reach the final plateau, you'll see some signs and Berry trees in the distance. There's a Ninja Boy hiding around here you can battle. Don't forget to grab the three sets of Pomeg Berries to the north – they used to cause some funny glitches! Head east from there, and you'll find Fortree City.
