Where to Start:

You'll want to head to the Contest Hall. Inside, talk to the receptionists. The one on the left is for playing with friends (multiplayer Contests), and the other is for going solo in single-player Contests. Easy enough!

Picking Your Style:

When you decide to enter a Contest, you'll get to choose from five different types: Cool, Beautiful, Tough, Clever, and Cute. Each of these types lines up with a specific Contest stat your Pokémon has, and also with the types of moves they can use. Your Pokémon's base stats in the chosen category will really help in the first round, and matching your Pokémon's moves to the Contest type is key for the second round.

Boosting Your Pokémon's Stats:

If you want to give your Pokémon an edge in specific stats, you can whip up some Pokéblocks. Feeding these to your Pokémon can boost their Contest stats. The move type matchups, though? That's something you'll have to figure out and plan for yourself.

Choosing the Difficulty:

After picking the Contest type, you'll choose the difficulty. There are four ranks: Normal, Super, Hyper, and Master. You have to unlock them in order, meaning you'll need to beat Normal to unlock Super, then Super to unlock Hyper, and so on. Don't worry, any Pokémon can jump in once a rank is unlocked, unlike in the older Ruby and Sapphire games!

The Contest Rounds:

Once you're in, the Contest begins with the Introduction Round. This is where you don't have to do much. It's all about your Pokémon's inherent appeal in the chosen Contest stat. The higher that stat, the better your Pokémon will look!

Next up is the Talent Round. This is where the action is! You'll be using your Pokémon's moves to show off their appeal. Each move has a specific Contest type and sometimes a special effect. The trick here is to take advantage of these effects. The whole round lasts for five turns, after which the results are calculated.

Winning the Contest:

After the Talent Round wraps up, all the appeals from both the Introduction and Talent Rounds are added up. The Pokémon with the highest total appeal is crowned the winner and gets the coveted Ribbon!
