Obtaining the Pokedex

After battling Brendan/May, head south back to Oldale Town.

Continue south out of Oldale Town onto Route 101.

Continue south on Route 101 back towards Littleroot Town.

Enter Professor Birch’s lab in Littleroot Town.

Professor Birch will give you the Pokédex, which records data on 721 species of Pokémon.

May will then give you ten Poké Balls, used to catch and hold Pokémon.

Leave the lab and head north towards Route 101. Your mother will call you as you approach; a brief cutscene (a non-interactive cinematic the game plays automatically) will play.

Continue onto Route 101. You can use your new Poké Balls to catch Pokémon here, though only Zigzagoon and Wurmple are commonly found.

May will appear and give you the DexNav app for the PokéNav Plus, allowing you to see which Pokémon you have caught on a given Route.

May will also demonstrate how to sneak up on Pokémon by slowly moving the Circle Pad when a Pokémon sprite is visible in the grass. These Pokémon often have special moves; for example, a Poochyena may have an elemental Fang move corresponding to your starter Pokémon (Ice Fang for Torchic, Fire Fang for Mudkip, Thunder Fang for Treecko).

To catch a Pokémon, lower its HP and use a Poké Ball.

Continue onto Oldale Town.

Heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center.

You can buy more Poké Balls, Potions, and Antidotes at the Poké Mart. It is recommended to buy a couple of Antidotes.

Head west onto Route 102.
