An Uncommon Proposition

Follow this Assassin's Creed Valhalla guide to complete the An Uncommon Proposition quest. We'll help you find Birstan, deal with bears, and make key dialogue choices.

Alright, let's get this 'An Uncommon Proposition' quest done in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. First things first, we need to head over to Colcestre. You'll find the Ealdorman's House on the west side of town. When you get there, Birstan won't be around, so your first task is to find and chat with a guy named Wyatt. He's not much help, but he'll point you towards Birstan's wife, Estrid. You can find her upstairs in a room on the northwestern side of the house.

Once you step into her room, a cutscene will kick off. You'll get a few dialogue choices here, but don't sweat them too much – they don't really change the story. After the scene wraps up, you'll be tasked with finding Birstan. He's chilling in a camp located to the southwest.

Find Birstan at the Camp

When you arrive at the camp, you'll notice it's a bit of a mess. Time to put on your detective hat and investigate what went down. You'll need to examine four things:

1. The corpse of a soldier right at the edge of the camp as you approach.
2. A disturbed pot sitting in the center of the camp.
3. The remains of a horse off to the south.
4. Look for tracks of an animal in a blood pool next to another corpse, further south.

After you've checked out all those clues, whip out your raven and scout the area to the southeast. That's where you'll find Birstan, who's currently in a bit of a pickle fighting off two bears. You'll need to jump in and help him out by taking down both bears. Birstan will give you a heads-up: try your best to avoid getting hit by their charges, as that's what does the most damage. You can dodge or roll out of the way, or even try to parry and block their basic attacks. Just a heads-up, you won't be able to parry any attacks that have a red rune aura, so dodging is probably your safest bet here. Once the bears are dealt with, Birstan will chat with you. Whatever you say next doesn't really matter; the outcome will be the same.

Follow Birstan Back to Colcestre

After your chat with Birstan, you'll need to escort him back to Colcestre. Once you're back in town, follow Birstan to the Ealdorman's House to trigger another cutscene. During this scene, you'll have to make some quick decisions from three dialogue options. They've put a timer on these, but don't worry, I've got you covered:

First dialogue choices:

1. “Send them back to Aelfred.”
2. “They will soon grow bored of meddling.”
3. “Full-grown in strength, the mistletoe stood…”

Second dialogue choices:

1. “Wine and song is the answer to any problem.”
2. “You should contribute to the festivities.”
3. “Nor fasting come to the feast…”

Third dialogue choices:

1. “Keep your men here, in the fields.”
2. “Fields will mean nothing if your land is taken.”
3. “Beware of sleep on a witch’s bosom.”

Once that scene is finished, follow Birstan upstairs to find his wife, Estrid. You'll have a few more dialogue options here, but this time they aren't timed. Just pick whatever feels right. When that scene concludes, the quest will be complete!
