Master the Phoenix and Kujata boss fight in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with this detailed strategy guide. Learn optimal loadouts and tactics to overcome this challenging superboss.

Alright, let’s talk about the Phoenix and Kujata superboss fight in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. These guys are pretty much the same as they are in the Combat Simulator, so if you’ve practiced those, you’re already halfway there. The biggest difference here is that Phoenix won't be summoning any regular enemies, but there's a catch: they're tethered together at the start.

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Phoenix: Weak to Ice.
  • Kujata: Weak to Fire, Ice, and Wind.

Phases:

  1. Phase 1: Kujata Focus

When the battle starts, you'll notice a tether connecting Kujata and Phoenix. Attacking Phoenix directly at this stage does almost nothing. Your first priority has to be Kujata. Use Fire, Ice, and Wind spells on it to pressure it and hopefully stagger it before it can unleash Tri-Disaster. If you've managed to get two Elemental Materia leveled up to Level 2 and linked them with Fire Materia, you can equip that to your armor to become immune to fire damage. This is super helpful for making Phoenix less of a threat while you focus on Kujata.

  2. Phase 2: Phoenix Focus

Once Kujata is down, Phoenix will use Rebirth Flame and bring Kujata back, but the tether will be gone. Sometimes, if you deal enough damage to Phoenix while it's casting Rebirth Flame, you can actually interrupt it, but let's assume for this guide that it goes off. Now that the link is broken, Phoenix is vulnerable to full damage. Your main focus should be on Phoenix now. Try to hit it with Blizzaga, but it can be tricky since it moves around a lot. A good window is when Phoenix uses Empowering Flame, as it stands still. Be careful though, because Empowering Flame buffs both Phoenix and Kujata. In the solo fight, Phoenix would cast Rebirth Flame twice after this, and it'll try to do something similar here, so it's a good idea to interrupt Empowering Flame if you can.

  3. Phase 3: Kujata Cleanup

After you finally defeat Phoenix, Kujata will be left alone. It doesn't gain any new moves or buffs, so just finish it off like you normally would. Remember, unlike the simulator versions, you can use items in this fight, so don't forget to stock up!

Strategy:

  • Loadouts: Use armor with the most materia slots and a strong weapon. Make sure you have Fire, Ice, and Wind Materia equipped across your party. Lightning is not needed. Consider Elemental Materia linked to Fire on your armor to mitigate Phoenix's fire attacks.
  • Support Materia: Magnify linked to a maxed Barrier Materia for Manawall is great for damage mitigation. Revival Materia on everyone is recommended, though items can also be used. Healing Materia is essential, and having Prayer Materia on one or two characters is a good idea.
  • Utility Materia: Don't forget Steadfast Block, Precision Defense Focus, Item Master (if using items), HP Up, and MP Up Materia.
  • Tether Mechanic: Focus Kujata first while the tether is active, as attacking Phoenix directly is ineffective.
  • Interrupting Phoenix: Try to interrupt Phoenix's Empowering Flame ability to prevent buffs for both bosses and potentially stop powerful follow-up attacks.
  • Item Usage: You can use items during this fight, so make sure you have a good stock and someone equipped with Item Master Materia.
