Walkthrough

    In the Thunder Plains, interact with glowing Qactuar Stones by pressing the Square (Playstation)/X (Xbox)/Y (Switch) button. The first stone you activate allows you to encounter a single Qactuar in random encounters.

    Qactuars have high evasion, making physical attacks miss often. Their magic defense is also high, so magic attacks from characters like Lulu are less effective. Valefor's Sonic Wings attack cannot be dodged and is effective.

    Qactuars can use the attack 1,000 Needles, which deals 1,000 damage regardless of stats. They may also run away even with low health. You can steal Chocobo Feathers from them.

    Directly north of the first Qactuar Stone, hug the left wall to find a chest containing 5,000 Gil.

    East of this chest, speak with Maechen, who is located under a lightning rod tower.

    Continue north along the right side of the area and look for an alcove on your map. Here, you will find a second Qactuar Stone and a chest containing a Water Ball. Equip Wakka with Waterstrike if possible for this area.

    Continue north until a cutscene (a non-interactive cinematic the game plays automatically) plays, after which the party will stop at the Travel Agency.

    At the Thunder Plains Travel Agency, you can save and rest using the Save Sphere. Speak to Rikku to learn about her dislike of thunder.

    Speak with Rin. If you tell him your study of the Al Bhed language is “okay,” he will give you Al Bhed Primer Vol. XIV.

    Check the wares of the NPC (non-player character — anyone the game controls, not you) behind the counter.

    Exit the agency through the hallway on the right to proceed to the northern Thunder Plains.

    Outside the agency, pick up the Yellow Shield dropped by an NPC. Equip it on Tidus as it provides Lightningproof, making him immune to Thunder-based spells.

    In the northern Thunder Plains, interact with Qactuar Stones. If you activated the two in the southern area, you need one more in the north. Activating a third stone allows you to spawn the chest for Kimahri's Celestial Weapon, the Spirit Lance, though you cannot open it yet.

    To spawn the chest for the Spirit Lance, after interacting with a third Qactuar Stone in the northern Thunder Plains, return to the southern section and interact with a “broken” lightning rod tower on the right side. The chest will remain there until you obtain the Celestial Mirror.

    In the southeastern corner of the northern Thunder Plains, find a chest containing an X-Potion.

    Encounter the new enemy, the Iron Giant, which is durable with high HP and armor. It performs three physical attacks before a party-wide skill. Use Auron's Power Break and magic spells (except Thundara for Lulu) against it. Overkills yield good AP.

    Continue north from the X-Potion chest to find a Save Sphere.

    Past the Save Sphere, a scene will occur. Behind a large structure, find a chest containing an Ether.

    East of the Ether, above a bend in the minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen) (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen), find another chest containing 2,000 Gil.

    Exit north to reach Macalania Woods.
Tips
  • Praying at Qactuar Stones makes them appear as random encounters. Activating more stones increases the number of Qactuars you can fight, up to three.
  • Valefor's Sonic Wings is a good attack against Qactuars as it cannot be dodged.
  • The Yellow Shield provides Lightningproof, which is useful against the Thunder-based attacks in the area.
  • The Iron Giant is a tough enemy; use debuffs like Power Break and strong magic or physical attacks.
