DLC Comparisons: Overview

The six major DLCs for fallout 4 are Automatron, Wasteland Workshop, Far Harbor, Contraptions Workshop, Vault-Tec Workshop, and Nuka-World. The base game does not include any of these DLCs. Purchasing them separately is more expensive than buying the Season Pass, which grants access to all DLC. The Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition includes the base game and the Season Pass. The DLCs can be broadly categorized into those focused on workshop/building content (those with "Workshop" in the name) and those adding new quests, weapons, enemies, and/or areas: Automatron, Far Harbor, and Nuka-World.

Automatron DLC:

Automatron adds new quests, dungeons, and the Rust Devils faction, who wear a unique armor set and are often accompanied by new robot enemy variants. It features a callback to Fallout 3 with a familiar cameo. The DLC introduces one new settlement, but its main feature is the Robot Workbench, allowing players to create custom robotic companions. These robots can serve as companions or settlers, excelling as guards or provisioners without needing a Recruitment Radio Beacon. They are also more easily replaced and won't take unattended power armor. Building more powerful robots costs more resources, and they have a fixed happiness level. While it offers some building elements, it's considered a hybrid DLC. It costs twice as much as the Workshop DLCs and the same as Nuka-World.

Wasteland Workshop DLC:

This is a dedicated workshop DLC with no new quests, enemies, or gear. It adds the concrete structure category, the Fusion Generator (producing 100 power), a Powered Water Pump, and Garden Plots for free crop planting anywhere. The Fusion Generator and Garden Plots are highlighted as essential for dedicated builders. The DLC also includes cages to lure pets like cats and dogs, or enemies, which can then be used in arenas for roleplaying purposes. The cost may be a stretch for those only seeking to streamline settlement building, but it appeals to those heavily invested in it.
