Navigate the Brotherhood of Steel's 'Blind Betrayal' quest in Fallout 4. Make tough choices about Paladin Danse and earn your promotion to Paladin. Full walkthrough included.

Alright, so you've made it to the Brotherhood of Steel questline and things are about to get real. This one's called 'Blind Betrayal,' and trust me, it's a doozy. You're going to have to make some tough calls, so pay attention. We'll get you through it, no sweat.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Head to Listening Post Bravo: This place is just east of Medford Memorial Hospital. If you've been there before, you can Fast Travel. As soon as you get close, watch out for two Machine Gun Turrets guarding the entrance. Take 'em out before they spot you.
  2. 2
Inside the Bunker: Once you're inside, you'll see a security door that requires an [Advanced] lockpick. If you've got the skill, pick it open for some extra ammo. Then, use the terminal on the wall to power up the elevator and head down. Be stealthy when you exit the elevator – there are two Protectrons waiting. Try to get the drop on them with a sneak attack. There's also a turret further in; take that out too. You'll likely see Danse in a blocked-off room nearby. Loot the area, and if you want, use the Weapon and Armor crafting benches. Grab the Grape Mentats by the blocked door – they're super useful for getting better prices when you're shopping. Before you head through the short cave area to confront Danse, save your game! You've got a big decision coming up, and if you want to try and save Danse, now's the time to equip your best Charisma gear.
  3. 3
The Choice: Kill or Spare Danse?
    1. Option A: Execute Danse (Follow the Brotherhood): If you're all-in with the Brotherhood's way of thinking, you can choose to execute Danse right here. Talk to him, and he'll actually encourage you to do it. Just agree with him, and he'll drop to his knees. A single shot to the head and it's over. After that, loot the room and grab 'Danse's Holotag' from his body. Your next stop is to report back to Maxson on the Prydwen. You'll get all the rewards, and the 'traitor' will be dealt with permanently.
  4. 4
Option B: Spare Danse (The Harder Path): This is a bit trickier, but totally doable if you've got good Charisma gear and aren't afraid to reload a save. Danse is pretty set on his own death, so at first, you need to convince him that's not the way to go. Just refuse to execute him. You'll get a few dialogue options with moderate speech checks. Pass any of them, and he'll agree to flee the Commonwealth, giving you 'Danse's Holotag' to prove you handled it. The game will then prompt you to leave the bunker. Grab the two Grape Mentats near the exit and loot the army Steamer Trunk. Then, head out.
  • Confronting Maxson (If you spared Danse): Outside the bunker, you'll run into Elder Maxson. He kind of expected you to hesitate. There's a lot of dialogue here where Maxson lays out his views, and Danse actually stands up for himself. Ultimately, Maxson gives you an ultimatum: kill Danse or he will. When that choice comes up, pick 'Listen to Me.' This gives you another chance to talk Maxson down with three more moderate speech checks. If you pass any of them, Maxson will back off, telling Danse he's officially 'dead' to the Brotherhood and can never show his face again. Maxson will then tell you to report back to the Prydwen. Danse will hang out in the bunker for a bit, but afterward, he's available as a permanent companion and won't go to the Boston Airport, the Prydwen, or the Cambridge Police Station.
  • Paladin Promotion: Head back to the Prydwen and report to Maxson. Depending on your choices, he might congratulate you or give you a bit of a scolding, but either way, he'll promote you to 'Paladin,' essentially taking Danse's old spot and his Power Armor. He'll then mention that Lance-Captain Kells has a new assignment for you, which officially wraps up 'Blind Betrayal.' Stick around for a few minutes, and the next quest, 'Tactical Thinking,' will kick off automatically.
    • 413 XP
    • Rank of Paladin
    • Danse's Power Armor (if spared)
    • Danse's Holotag (either way)
    Tips
    • Don't forget those Grape Mentats! They can save you a lot of caps when buying or selling gear.
    • If you're going for the speech checks to spare Danse, make sure you're wearing your best Charisma outfit and have any chems that boost it. Save often!
    • Even if you execute Danse, you still get the promotion and XP. It's just a different path with different companion outcomes.
