Detailed Abilities

Cavalier Proficiencies

Cavaliers are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, and all types of armor and shields, with the exception of tower shields.

Order

Cavaliers can join one of five Orders, which function as subclasses: Order of the Cockatrice, Order of the Lion, Order of the Shroud, Order of the Star, or Order of the Sword. Each Order provides unique benefits and abilities.

Tactician

As a standard action, a Cavalier can grant a teamwork feat to allies within 30 feet. This bonus lasts for 3 rounds plus 1 round for every two class levels. This ability can be used an additional time at 5th level and every 5 levels thereafter, up to 5 times at level 20.

Animal Companion

Cavaliers receive a mount, typically a horse, as their Animal Companion.

Challenge

Once per day, a Cavalier can issue a Challenge as a swift action. While challenging a target, the Cavalier's melee attacks deal additional damage equal to their class level. However, they suffer a -2 penalty to AC against attacks from enemies other than the challenge target. This ability can be used once per day, plus an additional time for every three class levels beyond 1st (up to 7 times at 19th level). Specific Orders may add further effects to the Challenge.
