Slayer Progression and Abilities

Slayer Proficiencies

Slayers are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light and medium armor, and shields.

Studied Target

As a move action, a Slayer can study a target, gaining a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls against it, and a +1 bonus to the DCs of Slayer class abilities. This bonus increases by +1 at levels 5, 10, 15, and 20, capping at +5.

At 7th level, Studied Target can be used as a swift action.

Slayer Talents

Starting at 2nd level, Slayers can choose abilities from Rogue Talents (using their Slayer level as their Rogue level) or Ranger's Combat Style Feats. They also gain access to two unique talents:

  • Trapfinding: Grants Trickery as a class skill and the Rogue's Trapfinding ability, using the Slayer's class level as the effective Rogue level.
  • Slayer Camouflage: Requires Terrain Mastery and Advanced Talents. Allows the Slayer to use Stealth to hide in a favored terrain, even without cover.

Note: While Slayers can select Combat Style Feats, they can only do so three times in total, at levels 2 or 4, 6 or 8, and 10 or greater.

Sneak Attack

From 3rd level, Slayers deal an additional 1d6 damage when an opponent is denied their Dexterity bonus or when flanking. This damage increases by 1d6 every three class levels, reaching a maximum of 6d6 at 18th level. Studied Target bonuses can be applied after dealing sneak damage.

Advanced Talents

At 10th level, Slayers can select from the Advanced Rogue Talents list.

Slayer's Advance

At 13th level, once per day, a Slayer can increase their movement speed by 30 feet for 1 round and move freely without provoking attacks of opportunity. At 17th level, this ability can be used twice per day.

Quarry

At 14th level, a Slayer can designate a target as their quarry as a standard action. This grants a +2 insight bonus to attack rolls against the quarry, and all critical hits are automatically confirmed. Only one creature can be designated as a quarry at a time.

Improved Quarry

At 19th level, the Slayer can designate a quarry as a free action, and the insight bonus to attack rolls increases to +4.

Master Slayer

At 20th level, the Slayer can make an attack against a studied target as a standard action at full bonus. If the attack hits, the target must succeed on a Fortitude save (DC 20 + Intelligence modifier) or die. This ability can only be used once per opponent.

Playing a Slayer

The Slayer is a potent damage dealer, benefiting from full BAB and sneak dice. The class is feat-rich, allowing for diverse builds. Combat Style Feats provide easy access to powerful combat maneuvers like two-weapon fighting or shield bashing without heavy Dexterity investment.

Studied Target is a core ability, offering significant untyped bonuses to attack and damage. Combined with Quarry abilities, this can lead to substantial combat advantages, including high attack bonuses, damage increases, and automatic critical confirmation. The ability to use Studied Target as a swift action at higher levels, and the potent Master Slayer capstone ability (which has a better chance of success due to Studied Target bonuses), make the Slayer a formidable force.
