Defeat Godfrey First Elden Lord in the Elden Throne in elden ring. Learn his attacks like Axe Rush, Grand Slam, and Stomp, and how to counter them.
After defeating Maliketh, the Black Blade in Crumbling Farum Azula, you will be transported to the Leyndell, Capital of Ash Site of Grace. From there, return to the Erdtree Sanctuary Site of Grace and proceed to the Elden Throne, the location where you previously fought Morgott, the Omen King. Godfrey, First Elden Lord will be waiting for you there.
This fight is an intensified version of your previous encounter with Godfrey, First Elden Lord. He is significantly more aggressive and will utilize dashes and stomps more frequently, making this effectively a third phase of your ongoing battle.
Godfrey, First Elden Lord - Attacks:
- Axe Rush: Godfrey charges forward with his axe held two-handed, attempting to strike with the flat of the axe. This is often used to counter ranged attacks and can be avoided by dodging backward.
- Charging Sweep: Godfrey drags his axe on the ground as he rushes forward, finishing with a diagonal upward swing. This attack is primarily used to punish players for summoning or healing and is easy to dodge.
- Axe Lunge: Godfrey rears back before lunging forward with a one-handed axe chop that has deceptive range. Dodge to the side to evade this attack.
- Dragging Sweep: Godfrey drags his axe along the ground while performing a sweeping motion. This is often used when attacked from the rear or flank and can be part of his Axe Combo.
- Leaping Axe Throw: Godfrey leaps into the air and throws his axe spinning into the ground. He then follows his axe to retrieve it, causing secondary impact damage. To avoid this, run or dodge towards Godfrey when he is in the air. Dodging away may result in being hit by the axe retrieval impact or the axe itself.
- Axe Combo: Godfrey performs a series of axe swipes, which are fewer but faster than in previous encounters. He often transitions into his Grand Slam attack after these combos and may use dash-stomps as setup moves.
- Grand Slam: Godfrey twirls his axe overhead before performing a powerful vertical chop. After the chop, he stomps the butt of his axe, creating a glowing furrow in the ground that detonates. The chop, rift creation, and explosion all deal damage. Dodging backward avoids the initial swing, but you must dodge laterally to avoid the stomp and subsequent explosion. This attack often concludes his Axe Combos.
- Stomp: Godfrey raises his foot to signal a stomp, causing stone spikes to erupt from the ground in a cone, dealing moderate damage over a large area. This can be avoided by jumping. These stomps are faster than before and often accompany dashes, sometimes used to set up his Axe Combo.
- Grand Stomp: Similar to the regular Stomp, Godfrey raises his leg for an extended period, allowing time for healing or attacking. Once ready, he unleashes a massive stomp with a huge impact radius. A well-timed jump can avoid damage, but be aware of potential secondary or tertiary stomps with less charge-up time.
Strategy:
Godfrey is considerably more aggressive in this encounter, favoring stomps over some axe attacks. He will dash and charge from the start. His attacks are now augmented by explosive rifts and impact shocks, making his deliberate chops more complex and multi-impact. His stomps, both the cone of rocks and the arena-wide blast, can be mitigated by jumping. However, his tendency to chain stomps, link them into his Axe Combo, and then follow up with a Grand Slam makes him a dangerous opponent with deceptive area-of-effect (AoE) capabilities and the ability to close distance rapidly. Despite his aggression, most of his attacks are deliberate and predictable once understood.
Melee characters can often close the distance while avoiding attacks to land hits. Ranged characters will find ample opportunities to attack safely between Godfrey's assault patterns.
