Discover the Sea of Thieves Treasure system: how to find, carry, and sell valuable items to Trading Companies for Gold, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Learn about different treasure types and mechanics.

Treasures are transportable items in Sea of Thieves that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure Items and has Representatives at every Outpost who accept these items for rewards. Voyages can lead players to these treasures, but they can also be found randomly across the seas, in shipwrecks, forts, or taken by enemies. Treasure items emit a colored glint or glow to help players spot them from afar.

To sell treasure, it must be carried by hand to the respective Company Representative. A pirate can only carry one treasure item at a time and cannot use equipment or resources while doing so. The treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Harpoons can retrieve treasure from a distance. Smaller treasure items can be placed in Container Chests, which can hold up to 3 items, making transport easier. Treasure left on land remains until interacted with, but treasure dropped in water sinks after about 5 minutes, except for Trade Good Crates. Sailing as a Trading Company Emissary grants Emissary Grade Reputation when picking up relevant treasure, with additional Reputation gained when the items are placed on the ship. These reputation increases are awarded only upon the first claim of a treasure item.

Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them. The three main companies are the Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance. Within these, treasure items are further categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, and Ghostly variants based on their source.

Gold Hoarders Treasure

These items are sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company for Gold and Reputation. Selling as a Gold Hoarder Emissary yields increased rewards and Emissary Value.

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests are locked containers sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, in Ancient Vaults, or randomly across the seas. They emit a White Glint. Types include Regular, Shipwrecked (found in shipwrecks), Coral (found in Siren Shrines and Treasuries), Ashen (found in The Devil's Roar, worth double), Valuable (from specific encounters), and Cursed (tied to specific locations or effects, generally very valuable).

Artefacts

Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, inside Treasure Chests, or in Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint. There are four types: Regular Artefacts (trinkets, containers, ornaments made of valuable metals and gems), Ashen Artefacts, Skeleton Artefacts, and Ghost Artefacts.
