Explore the world of Sea of Thieves treasure! Learn about different treasure types, mechanics of finding and selling them, and their value to Trading Companies.

Treasures are Transportable Items that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value.

Mechanics

Treasure is the main source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. Each Trading Company values certain types of Treasure Items and has Representatives at every Outpost. These Representatives accept all Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which take Crews on Quests that lead them to these Treasure items.

Aside from focused Voyages, random Treasure can be found all over The Sea of Thieves, whether hidden or beached on Islands, floating amongst Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks in the Sea, locked behind Vaults in Forts or taken/eaten by various menacing foes such as Skeleton Ships, Megalodons or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow surrounding it so that Players can spot them and determine their type from afar.

Every Treasure item has to be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative to receive a payout. A single Pirate can hold one Treasure Item at one time and cannot fight or use any Equipment or Resource Items while carrying it. The Treasure has to be dropped to regain full control of the Pirate. Every Treasure Item can be retrieved from afar with a Harpoon. Most smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests to hide any emitted Glow, Glint or Sound. Container Chests can carry up to 3 Small Treasure Items, making transportation and delivery of these items a fair bit easier.

Any Treasure that has been picked up and left on land will stay there until interacted with again, however any Treasure item dropped in water will sink after about 5 minutes of floating (With the exception of Trade Good Crates, which have been found to stay afloat for longer).

While sailing as Trading Company Emissaries, picking up a Treasure item that is relevant to the Company will give Crews Emissary Grade Reputation. The Crew will get additional Reputation if they put these items on their Ship. These reputation increases are given only when the Crew claims a Treasure item for the first time.

Types of Treasure Items

Treasure items are categorised by the Trading Company that wishes to purchase them for Currencies and Reputation (and Emissary Value if sailing as a Trading Company Emissary). Within the three main companies (The Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls and the Merchant Alliance), Treasure Items are also categorised into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold or Skeletal and Ghostly variants depending on their source.

Gold Hoarders Treasure

The following are the Treasure Items that can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. These Items yield increased Reward and Reputation as well as Emissary Value when sold to the Representatives as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked Chests that are sold to the Gold Hoarders, who have the Keys to open these Chests, for a margin of their valuable contents. Moreover, Treasure Chests can be found as a part of Treasure Maps and Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. Treasure Chests emit a White Glint from a distance.

There are six types of Treasure Chests: Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable and Cursed Treasure Chests:

  • Regular Treasure Chests have no distinct qualities to them.
  • Shipwrecked Treasure Chests are damaged, barnacle-encrusted versions of regular Treasure Chests that can be usually found underwater or in Shipwrecks. These sell for the same amount as their regular counterparts.
  • Coral Treasure Chests are coral-encrusted versions of the regular Chests that are found only in Siren Shrines And Siren Treasuries.
  • Ashen Treasure Chests are molten versions of regular Treasure Chests. These are most commonly found in The Devil's Roar and can be sold for roughly double the price of their regular counterparts.
  • Valuable Chests are Chests that are specific to various Encounters on the seas.
  • Cursed Treasure Chests are tied to specific locations or have specific effects attached to them and are generally very valuable.

Artefacts

Artefacts are smaller items that can be found either on their own, hidden away in Treasure Chests throughout The Sea of Thieves, or inside Fortress Vaults. There are four types of Artefacts: Regular Artefacts are a selection of small Trinkets, Containers or Ornaments made out of valuable metals and gems. These emit a Golden Glint from a distance. They share their pricing tiers with Treasure Chests.
