Learn about all types of treasure in Sea of Thieves, including chests and artifacts. Discover how to find them, carry them, and sell them to Trading Companies for gold and reputation.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Finding Treasure: Treasure can be found randomly on islands, floating in barrels or shipwrecks, within vaults in forts, or taken from enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, and the Kraken. Treasure items emit a distinct colored glint or glow, making them visible from a distance.
  2. 2
Carrying Treasure: To sell treasure, it must be carried by hand to the respective Trading Company representative. A pirate can only carry one treasure item at a time and cannot use equipment or resources while doing so. The treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Harpoons can be used to retrieve treasure from afar. Smaller items can be placed in Container Chests, which hold up to 3 items and can hide their glow.
  3. 3
Treasure Persistence: Treasure left on land remains until interacted with. Treasure dropped in water will sink after approximately 5 minutes, with the exception of Trade Good Crates which float longer.
  4. 4
Emissary Value: Sailing as a Trading Company Emissary grants Emissary Grade Reputation when picking up relevant treasure. This bonus is given only when the treasure is claimed for the first time.
  5. 5
Types of Treasure: Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them. The main companies are the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance. Within these, treasures can be Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, or Ghostly variants.
  6. 6
Gold Hoarders Treasure: These items are sold to the Gold Hoarders for Gold and Reputation. As Gold Hoarder Emissaries, crews receive increased rewards.
  7. 7
Treasure Chests: These are locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found via maps, in Ancient Vaults, or randomly. They emit a white glint. Types include Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral (found in Siren Shrines/Treasuries), Ashen (found in The Devil's Roar, worth double), Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests.
  8. 8
Artefacts: Smaller items found on their own, in chests, or in Fortress Vaults. They emit a golden glint. Types include Regular Artefacts (trinkets, containers, ornaments) and others that share pricing tiers with Treasure Chests.
Tips
  • Use your ship's harpoon to quickly grab treasure from a distance.
  • Store smaller treasures in Container Chests to make transport easier and hide their glow.
  • Be aware that carrying treasure restricts your ability to fight or use equipment.
  • Pay attention to the glint and glow of treasure to identify its type and location from afar.
  • Prioritize selling treasure relevant to your current Emissary flag for bonus reputation and value.
