Discover how to find, carry, and sell treasure in Sea of Thieves. Learn about different treasure types, trading companies, and maximizing your rewards.

Treasures are Transportable Items that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Treasure is the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves.
  2. 2
Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure and has Representatives at every Outpost who accept these items for rewards.
  3. 3
Representatives also offer Voyages, which are Quests that lead Crews to Treasure items.
  4. 4
Random Treasure can be found across The Sea of Thieves on Islands, floating in Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, or within Vaults in Forts.
  5. 5
Treasure can also be obtained from Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken.
  6. 6
All Treasure items emit a colored glint or glow, allowing players to identify them from afar.
  7. 7
Treasure must be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative for a payout. A pirate can only carry one item at a time and cannot use equipment or resources while carrying treasure.
  8. 8
The treasure must be dropped to regain full control.
  9. 9
Treasure items can be retrieved from a distance with a Harpoon.
  10. 10
Smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests (which hold up to 3 items) to hide their glow, glint, or sound, making transportation easier.
  11. 11
Treasure left on land remains until interacted with, but treasure dropped in water sinks after about 5 minutes (Trade Good Crates float longer).
  12. 12
Picking up relevant Treasure as a Trading Company Emissary grants Emissary Grade Reputation, with additional increases for placing items on the ship. These increases are given only on the first claim of a Treasure item.

Types of Treasure Items:

Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them. Within the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, items are further classified into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, and Ghostly variants.

Gold Hoarders Treasure:

These items are sold to the Gold Hoarders for Gold and Reputation. Selling as a Gold Hoarder Emissary yields increased rewards and Emissary Value.

  • Treasure Chests: Unbreakable, locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders. Found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, Ancient Vaults, or randomly. They emit a White Glint. Types include Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests.
  • Artefacts: Smaller items found individually, in Treasure Chests, or Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint. Types include Regular Artefacts (trinkets, containers, ornaments).
