Explore the diverse types of treasure in Sea of Thieves, from chests to artifacts. Learn how to find, carry, and sell them to Trading Companies for Gold, Reputation, and Emissary Value.

Treasures are transportable items in Sea of Thieves that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value.

Treasure is the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure Items and has representatives at every Outpost. These representatives accept Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead Crews on Quests to find these Treasure items.

Beyond dedicated Voyages, random Treasure can be found across The Sea of Thieves. It may be hidden or beached on Islands, floating among Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, locked behind Vaults in Forts, or taken by enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow, allowing players to spot and identify them from afar.

Each Treasure item must be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative for a payout. A pirate can only carry one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use equipment while carrying it; the item must be dropped to regain full control. Treasure can be retrieved from a distance with a Harpoon. Most smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests to conceal their glow, glint, or sound. Container Chests can hold up to 3 Small Treasure Items, simplifying transportation and delivery.

Any Treasure picked up and left on land will remain there until interacted with again. However, Treasure items dropped in water will sink after approximately 5 minutes of floating (Trade Good Crates are an exception and float longer). While sailing as Trading Company Emissaries, picking up a relevant Treasure item grants Emissary Grade Reputation. Crews receive additional Reputation if they place these items on their Ship. These reputation increases are awarded only upon the first claim of a Treasure item.

Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that wishes to purchase them for Currencies and Reputation (and Emissary Value if sailing as a Trading Company Emissary). Within the three main companies (The Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance), Treasure Items are further categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal and Ghostly variants based on their origin.

Gold Hoarders Treasure:

The following are Treasure Items that can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. These items yield increased Reward and Reputation, as well as Emissary Value, when sold to Representatives as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.

Treasure Chests:

Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked containers sold to the Gold Hoarders, who possess the keys to open them, for a portion of their valuable contents. Treasure Chests can be found as part of Treasure Maps and Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. They emit a White Glint from a distance.

There are six types of Treasure Chests: Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests:

  • Regular Treasure Chests have no distinct qualities.
  • Shipwrecked Treasure Chests are damaged, barnacle-encrusted versions found underwater or in Shipwrecks. They sell for the same amount as regular chests.
  • Coral Treasure Chests are coral-encrusted versions found only in Siren Shrines and Siren Treasuries.
  • Ashen Treasure Chests are molten versions commonly found in The Devil's Roar and sell for roughly double the price of regular chests.
  • Valuable Chests are specific to various Encounters on the seas.
  • Cursed Treasure Chests are tied to specific locations or have special effects and are generally very valuable.

Artefacts:

Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, hidden within Treasure Chests across The Sea of Thieves, or inside Fortress Vaults. There are four types of Artefacts:

  • Regular Artefacts are small Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made of valuable metals and gems. They emit a Golden Glint from a distance. They share their pricing tiers with Treasure Chests.
