Discover all types of treasure in Sea of Thieves, including chests, artifacts, and trade goods. Learn where to find them and how to sell them to Trading Companies for Gold and Reputation.
Treasures are transportable items in Sea of Thieves that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value. They are the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in the game.
Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure Items and has Representatives at every Outpost. These Representatives accept all Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead Crews on Quests to find these Treasure items.
Random Treasure can be found all over The Sea of Thieves, hidden or beached on Islands, floating amongst Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, locked behind Vaults in Forts, or taken by enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow to help players spot them from afar.
Treasure items must be carried by hand to their respective Company Representative for a payout. A pirate can only hold one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use equipment while carrying it. The Treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Harpoons can retrieve Treasure from a distance. Smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests to hide their glow, glint, or sound. Container Chests can hold up to 3 Small Treasure Items, making transportation easier.
Any Treasure left on land will remain until interacted with again. Treasure dropped in water sinks after about 5 minutes, except for Trade Good Crates which stay afloat longer. Sailing as Trading Company Emissaries grants Emissary Grade Reputation when picking up relevant Treasure items, with additional Reputation gained if placed on the ship. These increases are only given when a Treasure item is claimed for the first time.
Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them. Within the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, Treasure Items are further categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal and Ghostly variants depending on their source.
Gold Hoarders Treasure
The following are Treasure Items that can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. These items yield increased Reward and Reputation, as well as Emissary Value, when sold to Representatives as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.
Treasure Chests
Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders, who have the keys to open them, for a portion of their valuable contents. They can be found as part of Treasure Maps and Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. Treasure Chests emit a White Glint from a distance.
There are six types of Treasure Chests: Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests:
- Regular Treasure Chests have no distinct qualities.
- Shipwrecked Treasure Chests are damaged, barnacle-encrusted versions found underwater or in Shipwrecks. They sell for the same amount as regular chests.
- Coral Treasure Chests are coral-encrusted versions found only in Siren Shrines and Siren Treasuries.
- Ashen Treasure Chests are molten versions, most commonly found in The Devil's Roar, selling for roughly double the price of regular chests.
- Valuable Chests are specific to various Encounters on the seas.
- Cursed Treasure Chests are tied to specific locations or have specific effects and are generally very valuable.
Artefacts
Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, hidden in Treasure Chests, or inside Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint from a distance.
There are four types of Artefacts:
- Regular Artefacts are small Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made of valuable metals and gems.
