Discover the legendary treasures of Sea of Thieves! Learn about different treasure types, where to find them, and how to sell them to Trading Companies for gold and reputation.
Treasures are the primary means of acquiring Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. These valuable items can be sold to various Trading Companies located at Outposts, each specializing in different types of loot. While Voyages offer directed quests for treasure, it can also be found randomly across the seas, hidden on islands, within shipwrecks, floating in barrels, or guarded in forts and by formidable foes like the Kraken and Megalodons. All treasure items emit a distinct glint or glow, allowing players to identify them from a distance.
To sell treasure, it must be carried by hand to the appropriate Trading Company representative. A pirate can only carry one treasure item at a time, which restricts their ability to fight or use equipment. Dropping the treasure allows for full control. Treasure can also be retrieved from afar using a Harpoon. Smaller treasures can be stored in Container Chests, which hold up to three items and can conceal their glow, glint, and sound, simplifying transport and delivery. Treasure left on land remains until interacted with, but treasure dropped in water will sink after approximately 5 minutes, with the exception of Trade Good Crates.
When sailing as a Trading Company Emissary, collecting relevant treasure grants Emissary Grade Reputation, with additional gains if the items are brought aboard the ship. These reputation bonuses are awarded only upon the first claim of a treasure item.
Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that values them. The main companies are the Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance. Within these, treasures are further classified into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, and Ghostly variants depending on their origin.
Gold Hoarders Treasure: These items are sold to the Gold Hoarders for Gold and Reputation. As Gold Hoarder Emissaries, players receive increased rewards and Emissary Value. This category includes Treasure Chests and Artefacts. Treasure Chests, which emit a white glint, are unbreakable and can be Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, or Cursed. Artefacts, emitting a golden glint, are smaller items found individually, within chests, or in fortress vaults, and include trinkets, containers, and ornaments made of valuable metals and gems.
