Learn about the various types of treasure in Sea of Thieves, how they are found, their mechanics, and how to sell them to Trading Companies for Gold and Reputation.

Treasures are transportable items that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Treasure is the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves.
  2. 2
Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure Items and has Representatives at every Outpost.
  3. 3
Representatives accept Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value.
  4. 4
Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead Crews on Quests to find Treasure items.
  5. 5
Random Treasure can be found across The Sea of Thieves: on Islands, floating in Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, or within Vaults in Forts.
  6. 6
Treasure can also be obtained from Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken.
  7. 7
Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow for easy spotting and identification from afar.
  8. 8
Treasure must be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative for a payout.
  9. 9
A Pirate can only hold one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use equipment while carrying it. The Treasure must be dropped to regain full control.
  10. 10
Most Treasure Items can be retrieved from afar with a Harpoon.
  11. 11
Smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests (holding up to 3 items) to hide their glow, glint, or sound, making transportation easier.
  12. 12
Treasure left on land stays until interacted with. Treasure dropped in water sinks after about 5 minutes (except Trade Good Crates).
  13. 13
While sailing as Trading Company Emissaries, picking up relevant Treasure grants Emissary Grade Reputation, with additional increases for placing items on the ship.
Tips
  • Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them.
  • Within the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, Treasure Items are further categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, and Ghostly variants.
  • Gold Hoarders accept Treasure Chests and Artefacts.
  • Treasure Chests are locked and sold to the Gold Hoarders, who have the keys. They can be found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, Ancient Vaults, or randomly across the seas.
  • There are six types of Treasure Chests: Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed.
  • Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, in Treasure Chests, or in Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint.
