Earning Gold & Doubloons: Currencies Explained — Sea of Thieves Guide

Gold and Doubloons are the primary currencies in Sea of Thieves, essential for purchasing cosmetics, ship upgrades, and progressing your standing with various trading companies. Understanding how to earn and utilize them effectively is key to becoming a prosperous pirate.

Gold is the most common currency and is earned primarily by selling treasure to the various trading companies. The more valuable the treasure, the more gold you'll receive. Different trading companies value different types of loot:

• Gold Hoarders: Value treasure chests, trinkets, and artifacts.
• Order of Souls: Value skulls obtained from defeating skeleton captains and other spectral foes.
• Merchant Alliance: Value trade goods, animals (chickens, pigs, snakes), and Gunpowder Barrels.
• Reaper's Bones: Accept any treasure, but particularly value items stolen from other players or specific 'Reaper's Bones' items.

Gold is also earned from completing voyages, sinking enemy ships, and defeating world bosses. It's used to purchase cosmetic items from the Outpost shops, buy new voyages, and upgrade your ship's appearance.

Doubloons are a rarer currency, often obtained through special events, commendations, or by selling specific items to the Bilge Rats. Doubloons are particularly valuable as they can be used to purchase exclusive cosmetic items from the Bilge Rats, as well as certain items from the trading companies that might otherwise require a high reputation level. They can also be used to purchase specific voyages or to re-roll voyages.

Ashen Keys and Ashen Chests are special items that can be sold to the Bilge Rats for Doubloons. Ashen Keys are dropped by Ashen Key Masters (Skeleton Captains), and Ashen Chests are found by following Ashen Guardian's Notes. When combined, an Ashen Key can open an Ashen Chest, revealing Ashen Tomes, which are worth additional Doubloons and unlock cosmetics from the Ashen Dragon Set.

Ancient Coins are a premium currency, primarily purchased with real money, used exclusively in the Pirate Emporium for cosmetic items. While they can be found in-game in small quantities, they are not a primary source of wealth for most players.
