Discover the secrets of treasure hunting in Sea of Thieves. Learn about different treasure types, where to find them, and how to sell them to Trading Companies for gold and reputation.
Treasures are essential Transportable Items in Sea of Thieves. Players can find, carry, and sell these items to various Trading Companies to earn Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value.
Mechanics:
Treasure is the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. Each Trading Company has representatives at every Outpost who accept specific types of treasure. These representatives also offer Voyages, which are quests that lead players to treasure.
Beyond Voyages, treasure can be found randomly across the seas: on islands, in Barrels of Plenty, within Shipwrecks, or guarded in Forts. Treasure items emit a distinct colored glint or glow, making them visible from a distance.
Carrying treasure requires a pirate to hold it by hand, preventing the use of equipment or resources. A pirate can only carry one treasure item at a time. Treasures can be retrieved with a Harpoon. Smaller items can be stored in Container Chests, which can hold up to three items, easing transportation.
Treasure left on land remains until interacted with. Treasure dropped in water will sink after approximately 5 minutes, except for Trade Good Crates which float longer. Sailing as a Trading Company Emissary grants bonus Emissary Grade Reputation when collecting relevant treasure.
Types of Treasure Items:
Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that buys them. The three main companies are the Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance. Within these, treasures can be further classified into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, and Ghostly variants.
Gold Hoarders Treasure:
Items sold to the Gold Hoarders yield Gold and Reputation. Selling as a Gold Hoarder Emissary increases rewards and Emissary Value.
Treasure Chests:
These are unbreakable, locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, in Ancient Vaults, or randomly across the seas. They emit a white glint.
- Regular Treasure Chests: Standard chests.
- Shipwrecked Treasure Chests: Damaged, barnacle-encrusted chests found in shipwrecks.
- Coral Treasure Chests: Coral-encrusted chests found in Siren Shrines and Treasuries.
- Ashen Treasure Chests: Molten chests primarily found in The Devil's Roar, selling for double the price of regular chests.
- Valuable Chests: Chests specific to various encounters.
- Cursed Treasure Chests: Chests tied to specific locations or effects, generally very valuable.
Artefacts:
Smaller items found on their own, within treasure chests, or in Fortress Vaults. They emit a golden glint.
- Regular Artefacts: Trinkets, containers, or ornaments made of valuable metals and gems.
