Learn about the limitations and restrictions when handling and selling treasure in Sea of Thieves. Discover how carrying items affects combat and movement.
Treasure items are transportable goods that players can find, carry, and sell to Trading Companies for Gold, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Each Trading Company has representatives at Outposts who accept specific types of treasure.
Mechanics:
Treasure is the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. While carrying a treasure item, a pirate cannot fight or use equipment or resource items. The treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Most smaller treasures can be hidden in Container Chests, which can hold up to 3 items. Treasure left on land remains, but treasure dropped in water sinks after approximately 5 minutes, with the exception of Trade Good Crates. Sailing as a Trading Company Emissary grants bonus Emissary Grade Reputation when picking up relevant treasure.
Types of Treasure Items:
Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them. Within the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, items are further classified into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, and Ghostly variants.
Gold Hoarders Treasure:
Items sold to the Gold Hoarders include Treasure Chests and Artefacts. Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked, found via maps, in Ancient Vaults, or randomly. They emit a white glint. Types include Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests. Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, in chests, or in Fortress Vaults, emitting a golden glint.
